 Several Ohio Northern University students received an unconventional look at politics by attending the Republican and Democratic national conventions this summer. This type of educational opportunity allows ONU students to experience what they are learning in the classrooms and apply theory to real-life situations.
 
It was part of The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars. The students were under the tutelage of ONU political science faculty member Robert Alexander, Ph.D., himself a renowned expert in presidential politics, particularly in regards to the Electoral College.
 

The current Pokémon Go craze breaks the gaming stereotype by encouraging interaction and building a sense of community among players, according to an Ohio Northern University faculty member who is well-versed in video games and community-building.

“As a society, we have lost many of our traditional gathering places and social centers,” said Erica Neely, Ph.D., ONU associate professor of philosophy.

“However, I think people still have that innate desire to connect with others, but many do not have a clue how to go about it. Games such as Pokémon Go offer that opportunity.

The Ohio Northern University Observatory will host the first public event of the season from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27.

A highlight will be the opportunity to view a conjunction of Jupiter and Venus, in which they pass as close as 4/60th of a degree from one another. The event is free and open to the public.

The observatory is located on the western part of campus near Wander Field.

The Ohio Northern football coaching staff will offer a special Football 101 for Women program on Saturday, Aug. 26, from 1-2:30 at Dial-Roberson Stadium.

The program, which is also available to men, will include presentations on using the weight room, the rules of football, equipment and football strategy in a classroom setting followed by interactive and on the field drills on Bill Robinson Field.

All participants are encouraged to stick around for ONU's Intra-squad scrimmage immediately following the seminar.

Ohio Northern University will hold children’s auditions for the “Holiday Spectacular” at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, in the campus’ Freed Center for the Performing Arts.

Dr. Kelly Shields, associate dean at the Ohio Northern University Raabe College of Pharmacy, recently completed the American Association Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Academic Leadership Fellows Program (ALFP). The year-long fellowship began in July 2015, and finished with a commencement ceremony on July 23, 2016, at the AACP Annual Meeting in Anaheim Calif.
