The barrio clinic . . . and learning how much we take for granted

By Christine L. North

Monday, May 21— Our first day in the field

Today we took the entire group to a barrio clinic in a community called Las Carerras de Sosa.  All of the students –- engineering, nursing, everyone – went along.

I had a great time sharing a bit about the Dominican people and culture.

Pharmacy students meet legislators

Eleven Ohio Northern pharmacy students attended the 2012 National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) Conference on National Legislation and Government Affairs in Washington, D.C., from May 7-10.

The ONU students met with key members of the Senate and the House of Representatives, as well as government officials and political insiders, to share their views on targeted community pharmacy issues. The ONU contingent visited with both of Ohio's senators, Sherrod Brown and Ron Portman, to discuss proposed pharmacy legislation. Students also were able to meet individually with their congressional representatives or staff.

Delays, rain . . . but ONU contingent now ready to roll

By Christine L. North

I am in the Dominican Republic for my fourth visit.

We had a bit of a challenge getting here Friday – a mechanical issue with the plane delayed us for five hours – but we received a $100 voucher toward future travel and $6 to buy lunch so not a bad deal.  And given that there was a huge tropical depression sitting over the Dominican Republic and a lot of rain, we didn't miss much.  No real beach-time was sacrificed!

The purpose of this ONU student PMC chapter is to foster the development and awareness of personalized medicine both educationally and professionally. The organization consists of six sections based on the PMC document “The Case for Personalized Medicine”: technology, regulatory policy, payment, health information technology, genetic non-discrimination and medical education.
