ADA - Ada will try to rebound from a disappointing loss in their home opener to LCC when they kick off Northwest Conference play at four-time defending league champion Delphos Jefferson Friday.
Ada (2-1) can get a leg up on its quest for a first NWC title since 2013 with a win at the Wildcats. But they will have to play much better than they did in the 41-21 loss to LCC.
After a mostly close first half, the dangerous Jeff-Cats (2-1) hammered Paint Valley 54-20 last Saturday afternoon. Jefferson previously lost to Shawnee 27-6 at home in their opener, then edged past Versailles 14-7 in week two.
PAULDING - Spencerville won a four-team Northwest Conference golf match Thursday at the Auglaize Golf Course to clinch the league regular season championship.
Spencerville finished first with 160 strokes, followed by Paulding (177), Crestview (205) and Ada (225).
Bearcat Gavin Harmon was match medalist with a 36, nosing out teammate Ethan Harmon's 37.
Alex Morgan topped the Bulldogs with a career-low score of 47. Brevin Sizemore shot a 55. Wyatt Baderstcher carded a 61 and Austin Amburgey added a 62.
Rob Allison also posted a 64 and Jake Colwell added a 73.
UPPER SANDUSKY - The visiting Ada boys soccer team shut out Upper Sandusky Thursday evening 4-0 to extend their win streak to five.
Ada improved to 6-1 with its fifth win in a row.
Chris Reyes talied three goals to pace the victors. Logan Williams scored a goal and passed out an assist. Noah Pinkney dealt a pair of assists while Nate Allen doled out one assist.
Ace Gamble made one save in goal for the Bulldogs as Ada out-shot US 18-1.
Ada shared the NWC title with DJ in 2013. The Bulldogs beat the Wildcats 25-20 and then 27-22 in the playoffs that fall, both times in Delphos. Since then Jefferson has won their last three meetings handily (10-0, 51-7 and 44-0 last year).
Despite their recent success, the Wildcats experienced an off-season head coaching change. Chris Sommers, who guided DJ to three straight outright NWC titles from 2014-16, left this past January to take over the reins at arch-rival Spencerville.
Wildcat assistant and Napoleon native Brandon Behnfeldt was moved up to replace Sommers at the Jefferson helm in February.
ADA -- Freshman Jenna Fuller (Countryside, Ill./Lyons Township) scored her first career goal as the Ohio Northern women's soccer team defeated Denison 1-0 on Wednesday evening in the first game of a double header with the men's soccer team at Kerscher Stadium.
The Polar Bears improve to 3-1-1 overall with the victory, while the Big Red fall to 2-2-2.
After a scoreless first half, sophomore Rose Nienaber (Cincinnatti/Oak Hills) played a long through ball to Fuller who capitalized for her first career goal in the 58th minute to give ONU the 1-0 lead.
BLUFFTON — Sophomore McKenna Jordan (Toledo/Saint Ursula) had a match-high 14 kills to lead the Ohio Northern volleyball team to a 25-16, 25-19, 25-10 victory at area-rival Bluffton on Wednesday night at Sommer Center.
The Polar Bears improve to 7-2 on the season, while the Beavers fall to 4-5.
In the opening set, Ohio Northern led 15-14 before closing the set on a 10-2 run.
Northern jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the second set and led comfortably throughout to go up two sets to none.
