Wrestlers remain ranked No. 19 in fifth NWCA Division III Poll; Kwiat still in individual rankings

The Ohio Northern wrestling team is ranked No. 19 in the fifth weekly Brute-National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III poll for the 2012-13 season.

The Polar Bears (6-1 overall), under 25th-year head coach Ron Beaschler, one of only two Ohio Athletic Conference teams in the poll, which ranks the top 30 teams in the country.

Northern was ranked No. 19 in the fourth poll, was No. 17 in the third poll, was No. 13 in the second poll and was No. 10 in the first poll.

Individually, two ONU wrestlers are ranked in the top 10 of their respective weight classes.

Rushton leads men's basketball in 69-50 loss at Wilmington

Junior Branden Rushton scored a team high 16 points as the Ohio Northern men's basketball team fell to Wilmington by a 69-50 score on Wednesday evening at Fred Raizk Arena.

The Polar Bears now stand at 7-9 on the season and 3-6 in OAC play, while the Quakers improve to 8-8 and 5-4 in conference play.

Rushton shot a solid 7-of-11 from the field and also pulled down five boards.

Junior Jared Horstman also reached double digit scoring with 12 points on the night.

Northern held leads of 35-34 and 43-42 in the second half, but Wilmington finished the game on a 15-0 run, holding the Polar Bears scoreless for the last 5:25.

Snyder and Yoder lead No. 8 women's basketball past Wilmington

Senior Joanna Snyder and junior Cenzie Yoder both scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds apiece to lead the No. 8 Ohio Northern women's basketball team to a 76-60 victory on Wednesday night at the ONU Sports Center.

The Polar Bears have now won 14 in a row, and stand at 15-1 on the season and a perfect 9-0 halfway through OAC play. The Quakers fall to 9-7, 5-4.

Snyder was 9-of-17 from the field and Yoder shot 10-of-20.

Sophomore Jordan Kimes came off the bench to score 12 points and pull down eight rebounds.

Bethany Ahrens led Wilmington with 10 points.

No. 19 Ohio Northern opens OAC slate with 50-3 victory over Muskingum

No. 19-ranked Ohio Northern got pins from junior Jerry Pasquale and sophomore Cody Lovejoy and defeated Muskingum 50-3 in its Ohio Athletic Conference opener Tuesday night at the ONU Sports Center.

The Polar Bears improve to 12-2 overall and are 1-0 in OAC action, while the Muskies fall to 0-10, 0-1.

ONU took advantage of five forfeits and won nine of the 10 weight classes.

Pasquale got Ohio Northern off to a quick start with a pin in 1:28 at 125 pounds, improving to 16-6 on the season.

Muskingum forfeited the next four weight classes and ONU led 30-0 midway through the match.

Women's basketball moves up to No. 8 in seventh weekly D3Hoops.com poll

The Ohio Northern women's basketball team moved up one more spots to a season-high ranking of No. 8 in the seventh weekly D3hoops.com poll.

The Polar Bears received 439 votes in the poll, 27 more than the 412 they received in last week's poll.

DePauw (Ind.) stayed at the top of the poll with 623 points and 23 of the 25 first place votes, Calvin (Mich) is ranked second with 598 points and the two remaining first place votes and Hope (Mich.) is third with 525 points.

All-American Kyle Kwiat named OAC wrestler of the week

Ohio Northern senior All-American Kyle Kwiat was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week for the week of Jan. 7-13.

Kwiat, the defending national champion and No. 1-ranked wrestler at 174 pounds, became ONU's all-time career wins leader with a 6-0 record at the Budd Whitehill Duals at Lycoming (Pa.) College over the weekend.

He had a pin, four tech falls and a major decision and is now 22-3 on the season.

Kwiat is now 135-16 in his four seasons at Ohio Northern, surpassing the previous record of 133 wins by previous national champions Vinny Cameron (1986-89) and Luke Miller (2008-11).
