ONU students win awards

ONU students continue to distinguish themselves through their academic and creative exploits. Students recently earned honors in accounting and finance, mathematics, and poetry. 

The team of Matthew Golden, Zack Goodchild and Takumi Kijima won the 2017 Ohio Mathematical Association of America Student Team Competition. 

Meanwhile, ONU’s team placed first in the Beta Alpha Psi team competition during the business group’s Midwest Regional Meeting in Indianapolis. 

Also, student Rachel Cruea earned an outstanding poetry award at the annual conference of Sigma Tau Delta national English honorary.

Cheryl M Lasure 1957 - 2017

 Cheryl M. Lasure, age 59, died on Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at 4:26 a.m. at her residence in Celina.

          She was born on June 2, 1957 in Lima, Ohio to George W. and Nellie R. (Webb) Durbin who preceded her in death. On May 17, 1997 Cheryl married William E. “Bill” Lasure, who survives in Celina with their son, Gavin L. Lasure.

          Cheryl was a homemaker.

          Also surviving is a brother, Dave (Tracy Mitchell) Durbin of Las Vegas, NV and a sister, Betty (Earl Rice) Hunt of Dunkirk.

          Cheryl was preceded in death by a son, Keith Lasure.

Library Parachute Play Thursday

The Ada Public Library will sponsor a Parachute Play on the lawn from 3:30-4:30 p.m.on Thursday. The event is for children K-5.

DZs doin' good

Sisters of Delta Zeta sorority picked up litter along both sides of SR 235 for a mile just north of Ada on Wednesday afternoon. It was a hot job with the temperature of 82 at the time just a few degrees below the record high for April 26. Here, they hold up part of the "loot" of rubbish that ne'er-do-wells tossed from their vehicles. When you travel the clean looking roadside, you can thank these ladies (from left) Monica Foutty, Storm Smith, Gabby Molgaard, and Kayla Baxendell for a job well done.

Brit Rowe to speak in Tiffin

Brit Rowe, associate professor of art and design, has been selected to speak at the scholarship and learning conference at Tiffin University May 22-23.

The conference theme focuses on strategies that educators use to engage and understand their students inside and outside of the classroom.

Speakers will discuss active learning strategies, assessment, community engagement, project based learning, global environment and other topics.

Prof. Rowe has headed up a Grafik Intervention, which examines how graphic designers use their skills and knowledge to draw attention to the problem of urban decay by using various strategies for community-based graphic design.

Meredith Marshall receives $1,000 Liberty National Bank scholarship

Meredith Marshall, a 2017 Ada High School graduate, is one of two students who will receive a $1,000 scholarship through Liberty National Bank's scholarship fund, according to Ronald Zimmerly, president and CEO of the bank.

She will be a freshman at Otterbein University this fall, majoring in Chemistry. She is the daughter of Bryan and Colleen Marshall of Ada.

The second student is Alaura Jacobs, a 2017 Riverside High School graduate. Alaura will be a freshman at Rhodes State College this fall, majoring in Nursing. She is the daughter of Angela and Randy Hersh of Lima.
