Ada's latest news

Next time it rains and rains Ada will be ready

By Monty Siekerman
Last spring's rains caused considerable damage and inconvenience to property and people on the southwest side of Ada, especially to the campus where damage was reported to be $1 million.

A project is now in the design stage to fix a perennial problem whenever high rains occur.

The project will relieve flooding on West Lima Avenue and the campus retention ponds near the stadium and west of Fraternity Circle.

But, current thinking means trees will be eliminated in the heart of campus, an area known as the Tundra. Construction crews will be in the way and dirt/mud will be a temporary eyesore, but flooding must be resolved.

Medication Disposal Day in Ada April 23

By Monty Siekerman
A Medication Disposal Day will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, in the parking lot between Rite Aid and Northern on Main.

Those who want to dispose of expired or unused prescriptions as well as over-the-counter medications may give them to law enforcement officers at that time.

The meds will be disposed of in a safe, legal, and environmentally conscious way.
Here's a photo of last year's volunteers during which time 32 people disposed of unwanted meds.

For Icon readers living closer to Kenton, the event will be held at the hospital there at the same time.

They've been working on the railroad

The engineering students have done their job. Now it's up to Village Council to decide the painting and refurbishing of the caboose in Railroad Depot Park.  The students (from left, Victoria Smith, Cam Brown, Nick Hess, Sam Kerber) studied what needed to be done and talked with businesses to get an estimate of the cost: $11,736 for exterior sandblasting and painting, roof repair, and stenciling. Perhaps service clubs or individuals may help with some of the costs. The students reported that the railroad ties the caboose sits upon would last several more years.

Cindy Boehm message to students: "Don't ever give up"

Compiled by Darlene Bowers
Welcome to the Ada Icon’s “Ada Teacher Feature.” Here we share thoughts and insights from local teachers who lift up and inspire our students. Let us lift up and inspire these educators as well. Today we meet Cindy Boehm, second grade teacher, whose advice is “don’t ever give up.”  Cindy’s 29 years in the profession is a testament to that stamina, her spiritual foundation, and her joy in working with children.
