Ada Teacher Feature: Rachel Ludwig, Ada HS grad who never left first grade

Her advice to students: "Always try and know that it’s okay to make mistakes. Mistakes are proof that you’re trying."

By Darlene Bowers
Welcome to the Ada Icon’s “Ada Teacher Feature.” Here we share thoughts and insights from local teachers who lift up and inspire our students. Let us lift up and inspire these educators as well. Today we meet Rachel Ludwig.

Rachel Ludwig shares how she has the best of both worlds in being a mother and a teacher. Read on to discover what “dream job” this Ada High School graduate would pick. Mrs. Ludwig’s classroom may not be Broadway, but Mrs. Ludwig is certainly a star in her students’ eyes.

What grade do you teach?
First grade.

What degrees do you hold?
Ada High School ’02,  BA in Early Childhood Education from Ohio Northern University ’06, M.Ed. in Classroom Teaching from University of Rio Grande ’09.

How long have you been a teacher?
Ten years.

Why are you a teacher?
More than anything, I’ve always wanted to be a mother. I found that teaching is one of the closest professions to being a mother. Now that I am a mother, I have the best of both words. I believe being a mother has made me a better teacher, and being a teacher has made me a better mother.

What motivates you?
I read something once that said, “Be the teacher you would want for your own children.” This is my motivation every day.

What’s the best thing students can do for you?
Always try and know that it’s okay to make mistakes. Mistakes are proof that you’re trying.

What’s the best thing parents or caregivers can do for you?
I would encourage parents to be involved in their child’s education. Ask questions, show them that you care. If it matters to you, it will matter to them.

What makes Ada schools unique or different?
Our school is unique in that we have grades K-12 in one building. It allows our school community to be close-knit and supportive of one another.

What's your best or most memorable teaching moment?
There is no better moment than seeing the lightbulb turn on, when something finally clicks – it’s magic.

What excites, interests and captivates you inside the classroom?
Seeing my students engaged in learning and knowing that what they’re experiencing is meaningful. Follow us on Facebook to see what we’re learning: Mrs. Ludwig’s FIN-tastic First Graders

What excites, interests and captivates you outside the classroom?
My family! My husband and I have three beautiful children, ages one, three, and five.

If you weren’t a teacher what would you do/be doing?
I can’t imagine being anything other than a teacher and a mom – but, if I had to pick a “dream job” it would be performing on Broadway!
