The ONU Department of Music will present the Ohio Northern Symphony: “Heroes: Beethoven’s Eroica” at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 6 in the Freed Center for the Performing Arts. 

Music Director Travis Jürgens will conduct this season finale, which features Beethoven’s monumental “Eroica Symphony” (Symphony No. 3, op. 55 in E♭ major), a world premiere titled “Perpetua” by Ohio composer Kurt Doles, and up-and-coming violinists from Romania. Radu Kis will perform the finale of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, and Maria Marica will play the finale of the Bruch G minor Violin Concerto. 

Kis has participated in numerous national and international competitions, where he won many first prizes and artist diploma certificates. In 2016, Kis won the Prize of the Best Virtuous Violinist at the International Knopf Competition for Violin in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Marica was awarded the second prize in the 2016 Streichwerk International String Competition in Berlin. She also won several national competitions. As a soloist, Marica performed with orchestras such as the Radio Chamber Orchestra in Bucharest, Transylvania Philharmonic Orchestra, Ion Dumitrescu Philharmonic Orchestra and Junior National Youth Orchestra. 

Following the concert, guest composer Kurt Doles will host a free talkback and Q&A session, sponsored by ONU’s Cultural and Special Events committee. Doles, who is head of the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music in Bowling Green, Ohio, will talk more about the creative process of composition and his work and then take questions.

Tickets are $20 for general admission, $15 for ONU faculty and staff, $10 for seniors, and $5 for students. The Freed Center box office is open Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
