Today is Flag Day
Today is Flag Day, and the Lila Pifer home at Main and StR 81 is all decked out to observe the occasion. Lila stands on the balcony of her big brick home surrounded by a flag and a red, white, and blue umbrella turned on its side.
Here are some Flag Day facts:
• it is observed the same day each year, June 14.
• it is not a national holiday.
• it is a time to reflect on our freedoms, reaffirm our belief in liberty, justice, and our nation's unity.
• the flag was adopted by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777.
• the stars represent each state, the 13 stripes the colonies.
• President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first Flag Day in 1916.
• Flag Day became official by an Act of Congress in 1949.
• can you name Flag City (hint...it lies a half hour northeast of Ada).
• several other countries have their own Flag Day.
