Senior Michael Simmons finished fifth in his heat to qualify for the finals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA III Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday night at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
The top five from each heat, plus the next four best times advanced to the finals, which will be run on Saturday at 3:10 p.m. (EST).
"Michael handled his first experience at the championships extremely well," said head coach Jason Maus. "He ran a very clean and smart race and made his moves when he needed to put himself in a comfortable position."

Junior Lauren Rife, junior Kelsi Wurm and sophomore Kristin Cellentani have been named Academic All-OAC in women's tennis in voting done by the league's 10 faculty advisors.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be sophomore standing, maintain varsity status and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.50.
Rife, a biology/pre-med major, earns her second Academic All-OAC honor.
This season, she posted a 26-10 record and picked up her 100th career win on Apr. 27 against Muskingum.
Wurm went 13-2 in singles play on the season and was 4-3 in doubles, for an overall record of 17-5.
