ONU winter sports team updates

Indoor track, swimming and diving, lacrosse

Here's the update on ONU athlete teams competing over the weekend.

WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
The Ohio Northern women's indoor track and field team won the Capital Rick Meindl Invitational on Sunday at the Capital Center.

The Polar Bears (13-8 overall) edged Wilmington 98-84 with Capital finishing third with 40 points.

Ohio Northern won six of the 12 events in the tri-meet.

Junior Taylor Ellerbrock (Columbus Grove) and sophomore Lexi Neff (Northfield/Walsh Jesuit) finished 1-2 in the 800 in 2:24.46 and 2:25.87, respectively.

Junior Kayla Silva (Westerville/South) won the 400-meter dash in 1:01.63.

Ada's Oldfield sets school record at BG district

Oldfield's time of 61.36 shattered Tanya Nelson's 1991 Ada mark of 62.53 by 1.17 seconds. She shaved 1.39 off her sectional time as well.

BOWLING GREEN - Three Ada girls individuals and one relay quartet competed in the Div. II swim districts at the Bowling Green State University natatorium Friday.

Lady Bulldog sophomore Carlie Oldfield took fifth out of 32 swimmers in the 100 backstroke with a time that broke a 30-year old school record set by Tanya Nelson.

Oldfield's time of 61.36 shattered Nelson's 1991 Ada mark of 62.53 by 1.17 seconds. She shaved 1.39 off her sectional time as well.

Oldfield also swam the 50-yard freestyle at BG, and finished 11th out of 32 competitors.

An Ada elementary book fair you won't want to miss

Ada elementary’s virtual book fair started today and will continue through Sunday, March 7, according to Chanda Smith. The book shopping link follows:

• Ability to set up an "e-wallet" for grandparents/relatives to put money in so that a child can shop the fair

• Look through our virtual fair, allowing you to click on videos/trailers of many of the titles

• Ability to contact Mrs. Smith with any questions regarding shopping

Snow bunny

Bluffton and Ada Icons had separate snow photo contests. Here's Bluffton's winning photo. Melina Meza, a senior at Bluffton HS, took this photo. She said that it sits there as a reminder of all the little rabbit footprints that can be seen in the snow around Bluffton. Watch the Icon for more snow submissions this week.

Alice Hothem 1941 - 2021

Alice (Bailey) Hothem, 79, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2021, at 6:41 p.m. at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, Columbus.

She was born on Nov. 14, 1941, in McGuffey, Ohio, to the late Jarvie and Hazel (Clark) Bailey.  Alice married Howard Keith Hothem and he preceded her in death.

Alice retired from being a home health care provider. She was a member of the Quickstep Pentecostal Church of God in Alger, Ohio since 1991. She was an avid gardener, loved to crochet and read.
