ONU predicted to finish in the middle of the OAC pack

The coaches liked Ohio Northern slightly better than the media Tuesday at Ohio Athletic Conference Media Day at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton. The Polar Bears were picked to finish fourth by the conference's coaches, while the media picked ONU fifth. 

Northern garnered 52 points from the coaches vote, as national runner-up Mount Union was chosen to win the conference, reeling in 81 points and nine first-place votes. The Polar Bears collected 171 points from the media, and the Purple Raiders had 259 points and 26 first-place votes to sit atop that poll, as well.  

ONU women listed on lacrosse academic honor roll

The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association released its Zag Sports Academic Honor Roll. Quite a few Ohio Northern student-athletes made the list.

Juniors Eli Carter (Lebanon), Ann McArn (Bay Village/Western Reserve Academy), Kayla Penrod (Marysville) and Maddie Storr (Clarence, N.Y.) were honored alongside 649 other athletes from across Division III. To be eligible for the honor roll, athletes must be a junior, senior or graduate student and possess a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.

All four aforementioned Polar Bears performed well on the field, as well. Storr ranked second on the team with 34 goals scored to go with her team-high 16 assists.

ONU men's soccer team in Spain

The Polar Bears are currently on their sixth trip to Europe in program history and will spend 11 days and 10 nights in the Catalonia region of Spain near Barcelona and a day trip to France before returning home Aug. 12

LES PRESSES, Spain — ONU senior Timothy Hoffman  scored on a penalty kick just before halftime and junior Mitchell Colvin added a goal three minutes into the second half to lead the Ohio Northern men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over the senior Les Presses team on a beautiful Monday evening in the volcanic area in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains in northern Spain.

Earlier in the evening, the Polar Bears played to a 0-0 draw against a junior Les Preses squad.

Bud Denega named ONU assistant SID

Bud Denega was named the Assistant Sports Information Director at Ohio Northern University. Denega will work within the ONU athletics department while pursuing a degree in sport administration at Bowling Green State University this fall.

Denega comes to Ada from Sheridan, Wyo., where he spent the last 21 months as the sports reporter/editor at The Sheridan Press. In his time there, Denega covered four high schools and one junior college and collected Wyoming Press Association awards for feature writing, sports news writing and column writing. 

Two ONU lacrosse players in first-ever National Collegiate Box Series National Championship

 Ohio Northern will have a couple student-athletes contending for a national title this weekend.

Senior lacrosse player Chris DiMarco (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) and sophomore Matt Huizenga (New Albany) will compete for the Rivermen out of Columbus, Ohio, in the first-ever National Collegiate Box Series National Championship in Huntington Beach, California, Friday and Saturday.

The Riverman advanced to the national championship by way of defeating the Walleyes, based in Cleveland, in the Ohio Collegiate Box Lacrosse League Championship — a summer lacrosse league comprised of five teams.

ONU’s All-American Ryan Bruns signs with Aquimisa Carbajosa

Ryan Bruns has parlayed his impressive collegiate basketball career into a professional contract. The former Ohio Northern standout signed with Aquimisa Carbajosa of the Liga Espanola de Baloncesto Aficionado (EBA).
