ONU women's soccer player gains national accolade

Ohio Northern senior Hannah Reich (Howell, Mich.) has been tabbed a First Team All-American by the United Soccer Coaches for her efforts during the 2017 season.

Reich, a four-year starter as a defender, started in 79 of 80 career games, while appearing in all 80 games. She collected her first All-Great Lakes Region accolade for her career this season after being dubbed a First Team All-Great Lakes Region member.

Icon readers: With college basketball season now in full swing, I have decided to publish a weekly podcast that will give listeners inside access to the Ohio Northern men’s basketball team.

 

Alongside my co-host (and four-year roommate) Brandon Hawkins, who is also a senior on the team, we will do weekly player interviews as well as breakdowns of each game. We will detail the ups and downs of the season, from the perspective of guys who are on the court and in the locker room every day.

Five special soccer opportunities in addition to league play are available in January at Bluffton Family Recreation, according to Amy Byers, sports coordinator.

BFR’s winter session starts the week of Jan. 8, and registration is now underway. Persons can register by calling BFR at 419-358-4150 or by registering online at: www.bfronline.com

• A soccer skills class takes place Thursdays from 4: 30 to 5:30 p.m. for youth 14 and under. Mateo Bonifaz, BHS grad, is the class instructor.

4 women soccer players gain honors

The Ohio Northern women's soccer team saw four athletes named All-Great Lakes Region by the United Soccer Coaches. 

Senior Hannah Reich (Howell, Mich.) and sophomores Meagan Grierson (Miamisburg) and Haley Moses (Mason) were all named First Team All-Great Lakes Region, while sophomore Rose Nienaber (Cincinnati/Oak Hills) was named Second Team All-Great Lakes Region.

Fortner wins region honor

Senior J.J. Fortner (Maumee/Anthony Wayne) has been named Second Team All-Great Lakes Region by the United Soccer Coaches for his efforts during the 2017 season.

Fortner led the Polar Bears (12-6-2 overall) to their 12th consecutive winning campaign and earned his first career All-Great Lakes Region honor.

The senior First Team All-OAC honoree led the team and ranked second in the Ohio Athletic Conference with 14 goals and led the team and ranked third in the OAC with 30 points this season.

Women win decisively in hardwood home-opener

Senior Courtney Cramer (Arcadia) poured in a career-high 21 points to the lead the No. 15-ranked Ohio Northern women's basketball team to an 88-49 victory over Case Western Reserve in the 2017-18 home-opener at the ONU Sports Center on Wednesday evening.

The Polar Bears improve to 4-1 overall, while the Spartans drop to 2-3 on the year.

Cramer led the way with a game-high 21 points, while shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the 3-point line, and added a game-high five assists and three steals.
