Ada Ham radio operators have a field day

Ada area ham radio operators were among members of the Kenton Amateur Radio Club who participated in Field Day 2016 Saturday and Sunday.

The annual Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) 24-hour event involves both a contest aspect and a test of ham radio operators' preparedness to provide essential communications when disasters strike.  Amateur radio clubs nationwide participate.

Working with first responders in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and other crises, ham radio has often provided emergency communications when other systems have failed.

Midwest Rehab renovates church ed wing into apartments

The former church educational wing has been renovated into a 5 bedroom apartment owned by Midwest Rehab, which is located on another portion of the former church property.

Ohio Northern University celebrates Independence Day with Lima Symphony Orchestra

The Lima Symphony Orchestra will celebrate Independence Day with a “Patriotic Pops” concert on the campus of Ohio Northern University on Saturday, July 2, at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Helen Ellis 1921 - 2016

Helen J. Ellis, 94, died on Saturday, June 25, 2016, at 8:30  p.m. at her residence in rural Alger, Ohio.

Helen was born on Oct. 12, 1921, in Delphos, Ohio to Franklin E. and Alma L. (Patton) McGlaughlin who preceded her in death.  She married Thomas R. Ellis on Sept. 14, 1941 and he died on Nov. 12, 2003.

Helen was a homemaker.

Surviving are: one son: Thomas Earl (Rena Scarberry) Ellis of Glouster, Ohio; one daughter: Carol (Dennis Messmer) Tindall of Lancaster, Ohio; nine grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, seven great great grandchildren including two special great grandchildren: Chance Taylor and Helena Taylor of Alger, Ohio.

ONU ranked 10/11th in preseason football polls

The Ohio Northern football team is ranked No. 10 in the 2016 Sporting News College Football magazine preseason poll and is No. 11 in the Lindy's Sports College Football preview magazine preseason poll.

ONU junior linebacker Zach Schmerge was also named a Preseason All-American by the Sporting News. Schmerge was named Third Team All-North Region and First team All-Ohio Athletic Conference as a sophomore last season. He led Ohio Northern and was second in the OAC with 112 tackles in his first season as a starter.
