Five Ohio Northern student/athletes were named Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference in men's cross country for the 2013 season.

Seniors Tyler Feitshans and Mathew Johnson, juniors Nathan Rosenbaum and Dan Steigerwald and sophomore William Huddleston all received the honor.

The award winners must be a sophomore or higher in class standing, maintain varsity status and have a cumulative grade-point-average of at least 3.50.

Feitshans is a three-year letterman and earned All-OAC honors with a ninth place finish at this year's OAC Championships.

Today Governor John R. Kasich authorized use of State Disaster Relief funds to assist the Villages of Cloverdale (Putnam Co.) and Jerry City (Wood Co.) as they continue to recover from the severe storms and tornadoes that impacted Ohio on November 17, 2013.

“I’ve reached out to local officials across the impacted areas to make sure the state is doing all we can to help our neighbors get back on their feet,” said Kasich.  “Both Cloverdale and Jerry City are in need of some additional assistance, so we’re going to help them get through this and will continue to monitor the situation in case future needs arise.”

Phillip Zoladz, Ohio Northern University assistant professor of psychology, presented two posters at the 43rd annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience in San Diego on Nov. 9-13.

Five research assistants (three current ONU students and two alumni) from Zoladz’s laboratory joined him for the presentation. The topics of the two posters were “Stress administered immediately before learning reduces false memory production and selectively enhances true memory in females” and “Pre-learning social evaluative stress exerts sex-specific effects on long-term picture memory.”

It’s back and bigger than last year.

The Ada Public Library’s holiday basket silent auction returns to the library from Dec. 2 to Dec. 14, according to Amanda Bennett of the library. And, there’s still time to contribute a basket.

“The silent auction is a series of baskets or items on display at the library, all items can be bid on, with the highest bid winning the items. All money raised from bids goes toward Library programming in 2014,” said Bennett.

Ohio Northern University student Nathan Rosenbaum, a junior mechanical engineering major from Orrville, Ohio, was named the NCAA Division III Men’s Cross Country Elite 89 Award winner Nov. 22 at Collier Arena.

Rosenbaum won the award as the male student-athlete with the highest GPA among competitors at the NCAA Division III Men’s Cross Country Championships. Rosenbaum, who is a three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference honoree and earned a bid to the NCAA championships with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA III Great Lakes Regional in Grand Rapids, Mich., finished 152nd overall at the national meet.

Over the weekend The Icon sat down with Santa Claus and discussed everything starting from Dec. 26 all the way to Dec. 25. The more we talked with him, the more we began to think he resembles a certain Ada resident. But we could never quite nail it down. Our chat took place while he visited youngsters of all ages in a town north of Ada.

By the way, Santa has a facebook page and may be found on LinkedIn. Here's a small portion of our talk.
