Ohio Northern University’s Freed Center for the Performing Arts presents the Ohio Northern University Symphony on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 4:30 p.m.
The ONU Symphony Orchestra will perform “Night on Bald Mountain” by Modest Mussorgsky followed by “Concerto for the Flute” by Carl Nelson, featuring ONU senior Marissa Mauro. The concert will conclude with Borodin’s “Symphony No. 2.” Borodin is considered one of the great Russian composers, known as The Mighty Handful, along with Mussorgsky, Rimksy-Korsakov and others.
The Ohio Northern University Office of Multicultural Development and the Department of English present acclaimed filmmaker Ya’Ke Smith on Thursday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. in the McIntosh Ballroom to help celebrate Black History Month.
During his lecture, titled “Art Reflecting Life, Life Reflecting Art: Cinema as a Social Tool,” Smith will discuss his experiences as a filmmaker and how his work seeks to debunk negative stereotypes, while sometimes using those same stereotypes to expose truths in the black community.
The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) and International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA) have recognized Bluffton Hospital and Blanchard Valley Hospital (BVH) for excellence in lactation care.
Bluffton and BVH have received the IBCLC Care Award in recognition for staffing professionals who hold the prestigious International Board Certified Lactation Consultant certification (IBCLC) and providing a lactation program that is available five to seven days a week for breastfeeding families.
Apollo Career Center will hold its second ApolloPalooza on February 11, 2014, 5:30-7 p.m., to kick-off National Career and Technical Education Month. ApolloPalooza will showcase both the high school and adult education programs. The event is free and open to the public.
“Because Apollo is not a traditional high school or college, and because adults and high school students are being trained during the day and evening, Apollo is opening up the building, for the public to see and experience what Apollo students learn everyday,” said Dana Dukes-Norton, district communications manager.

Betty P. Stevenson, 93, died on Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at 2:35 a.m. at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Kenton.
She was born on Dec. 10, 1920, in Dola, Ohio, to Carl and Viola (Dirmeyer) Kahler and they preceded her in death. On Dec. 25, 1938, she married Charles W. "Chuck" Stevenson and he preceded her in death on Dec. 14, 1996.
She formerly served as clerk for Liberty Township and had worked at the Ada IGA. She was a member of Sugar Grove United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
The weather and school cancellations kept The Icon from talking with Ada High School students in January. We were finally able to get back on track this week. We caught up with Brittney Archer recently in study hall. Here’s part of our conversation.
You are a senior this year at Ada High School. What is your school schedule? Brittney: Communication, Sociology, Calculus, then two study halls in row, English College Prep, Physics and Anatomy.
The Village of Ada recently hired Jamie Hall as Assistant Village Administrator.
Hall officially began his post on Feb. 3, but has been attending various meetings since being hired. He comes to the village with business experience, having most previously worked with DeHaven’s Garden Center in Lima.
Jamie and his wife, Valerie, live in Ada with their two sons. The Halls have called Ada and the surrounding area home for over 15 years. Having grown up in Carey, a village that is similar in size to Ada, Hall says that he likes the small, hometown atmosphere he has found and sees it as a great place to raise his family.
President Heather Cox called the weekly meeting of the Ada Kiwanis Club to order at 12:00 noon on Tuesday February 11th in McIntosh Center, ONU.
The invocation was offered by Jon Umphress.
