October 2015

Several significant items were on the recent Ada Kiwanis Club meeting agenda.

• Joe Ferguson presented a certificate of recognition from Hardin County 4-H Junior Fair Livestock Sale to the club. He noted that as part of a buyer’s group, the club supports 76 Jr. Fair projects for Ada youth.  He presented a certificate to President John Berg for the club’s participation.

• Jon Umphress was awarded a certificate of recognition for his service to the club, especially for his service as Club Secretary-Treasurer from 1999-2009.  It was noted that the club owes Jon a great debt for his superlative service.

With the offense struggling due to inclement weather, it was the Bulldog special teams unit that made the play of the game, helping to secure a 14-13 Ada road victory over the Crestview Knights. The tough Northwest Conference win moves the Bulldogs to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the NWC.

Dreadful weather conditions wreaked havok on both offenses as neither team was able to find a groove early in the game. With Ada consistently shutting down Crestview's potent running game for most of the first quarter, the Knights would turn to the arm of quarterback Dylan Grandstaff.

It’s no surprise to anyone that Ada pool receipts this summer were lower than previous years. That loss is a result of many factors including the weather.

In Tuesday’s Ada council packet a year-end pool report compares income and expenses for the past five seasons. Three of this year’s bottom lines show:

• $37,400 pool revenue before income tax ($35,933 in 2014)
• $112,880 income tax receipts ($163,203 in 2014)
• $150,288 total revenue after income tax  ($199,136 in 2014)

On the plus side expenses were $97,276 this year ($128,603 in 2014).

On Tuesday, October 6th the Ada Public Library will kick-off the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program!

The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless. In an attempt to spread the love of reading, and also encourage a successful start to your child’s education, we encourage you to embark on 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten. Sounds daunting, but if you read just 1 book/day, that’s 365 books in 1 year, 730 books in 2 years, or 1,095 books in 3 years.
