October 2015

October, November and December night time skies are worth watching. Here's an update on what's up from the Ohio Northern University Astronomy Observatory. Three of these e events are programs at the observatory open to the public.

On the morning of Wednesday, Oct. 28, there will be a triple conjunction of Venus, Jupiter and Mars in the eastern sky. The three planets will form a tight, 1-degree triangle. There will be no observatory event for this, but it is an easy event to enjoy with the naked eye.

The Ada Kiwanis Club spaghetti dinner will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22, in the high school cafeteria.

Tickets are $8 at the door, with no cost to children 10 and under.

The meal includes spaghetti, salad, bread, bread sticks, and beverage. Profits support community projects.

Photos and story by Monty Siekerman

Monty Siekerman took a tree walk around Ada earlier this week and he's sharing with viewers what he observed about trees turning colors.

LOTS OF PHOTOS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE STORY.

Kaboom
The Civil War cannon in the Railroad Depot Park no longer goes "Kaboom" but this reddish orange tree makes a loud statement of its own. The giant hanging baskets in the park and on several street corners may be gone, due to Jack Frost, but a drive around the village shows a lot of color along roadways and in yards this time of year.

Death is not a topic one wants to think about, but preparing for the eventual can be helpful for family members.

Funeral planning was the topic discussed by three local experts on Monday evening at a community event at ReStore.

A staff member from Congressman Bob Latta's office will be at the Ada Public Library from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22, to hear from Ada area residents about concerns and issues.

Social security, Medicare, and veterans affairs are usually the top three concerns at meetings such as this which are held throughout the district.

If residents have opinions about other issues (immigration, Chinese computer hacking, guns, infrastructure, budget, etc.) they may voice them to the staff member who will be present.

The Village of Ada Personnel Committee Meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 4 p.m. in Council Chambers.

Despite losing to Bluffton on Friday, the Ada Bulldogs football team are still in the top eight teams in Region 26, Division VII state computer rankings.

This week the Bulldogs are in the 4th spot. To view this week's rankings, click here.

The University of Findlay’s Mazza Museum dedicated the Catherine Freed Galleria in the museum on Oct. 14.

The galleria is an existing wall near the entrance that features a variety of artwork and corresponding books. The work displayed changes approximately every month to correspond with museum events, conferences and holidays, and to showcase newly acquired pieces.

From the ONU Pharmacy Facebook Page - Dr. Metta Lou Henderson, retired ONU professor and associate dean, returned to campus last week to speak with pharmacy students in the Contemporary Health class.

She is photographed here with pharmacy students Joelle Hall, Franziska Pippig and Anna Crooker.

Dr. Henderson graduated with her BS and MS in the 1960’s and later with the PhD degree from the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy.

She noted that when she graduated there were no computers, technicians, pharmacists couldn’t counsel patients, and only about 10% of pharmacists in her college class were female.
