 Haven James Lawrence, 41, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019, at 10:40 a.m. at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio.

He was born on Feb. 3, 1978 in Findlay, Ohio, to James “Wink” and Thearse “Dolly” (Salsbury) Lawrence. His father survives in Alger and his mother preceded him in death. On July 16, 1999, he married Jessica Howard and she survives in Alger.

Haven was a 1996 graduate of Upper Scioto Valley Schools and was a Machine Operator Trainer for Graphic Packaging for 5 years.

He competed in 15 rounds as a freshman, which included the Ohio Athletic Conference Championships

To put it frankly, Ethan Smith didn't think he could hit a golf ball that far. About a decade ago, a-much-younger Smith was hitting balls in his backyard like he had so many times before. 

He flushed a six iron. The ball soared through the southern Ohio air before surprisingly, and unfortunately, striking his neighbor's window. 

"I didn't think I could hit it that far," Smith said.

Smith walked over to his neighbor's house and apologized — fortunately the window didn't break. As funny as the situation sounds, a passion was born on that day. 

FDA approves pre-measured Gvoke (glucagon) to treat severe low blood sugar

Timothy W. Arnett, 53, died on Monday, Sept. 30, 2019, at 5:23 p.m. at OhioHealth Hardin Memorial Hospital, Kenton.

He was born on May 9, 1966, in Lima, Ohio, to Donald and Ethel (Rowe) Arnett and they survive in Alger. Tim is also survived by his daughter, Jaime (Trevor) Howe of Ada; a brother, Jody Arnett of Ada; a sister, Sharlene (Darrin) Collins of Ada; and eight nephews: Jake and Isaac Collins, Noah, Aaron, Joshua, Tristan, Benjamin and Jayce Arnett.

Tim worked as a semi driver for Graphic Packaging, Kenton.  He enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle with all of his buddies whom he dearly loved.

Cleveland.com study takes into account school district household income

In a new Ohio school rankings  based upon the 2019 report card grades, and adjusted for household school district income, Ada schools is ranked 15th in the state – out of 608 school districts.

For the last two years, Richard Exner, a data analyst out of Cleveland, has re-ranked Ohio’s schools on their results compared to student family income.

His ranking is based on how did schools do when they are adjusted for wealth. Ada’s ranking as 15th in jump from last year’s ranking of 23rd.

Ruth Hackworth Wright, 91, died on Friday, Oct. 4, 2019, at 1 a.m. at The Springs in Lima, Ohio.

She was born on Feb. 1, 1928, in Prestonsburg, Kentucky, to the late Merda B. and Dora (Adams) Williams.  On Jan. 2, 1947, Ruth married Milo Hackworth and he preceded her in death on Oct. 4, 1982.  She later married Lawrence Wright on April 16, 2001, and he preceded her in death on May 29, 2008.

Ruth was a homemaker. She was a member of the Union Chapel Missionary Church of Lima, active in Loyal Crusaders Sunday School Class, Women’s Ministry, and JOY Fellowship.  She was a former member of the Ada Senior Citizens.

James Lehr Kennedy is grand marshall of Saturday homecoming parade

Ohio Northern University has a full slate of activities on tap for Homecoming weekend Oct. 4-6.

The annual event offers a special time for former students to return to their college home, relive cherished memories, visit with longtime friends and reconnect with their alma mater.

The centerpiece will be the Homecoming parade in downtown Ada beginning at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 5, which will feature James Lehr Kennedy as grand marshal.

Circulation is increasing. Involvement is increasing. But funding from the state of Ohio is going down.

ADA - Visiting Riverdale defeated Ada 7-0 in a girls soccer match Thursday evening.

The loss dropped the Lady Bulldog record to 3-10-1.

"We lost to a good Riverdale team," said Ada head coach Doug Poling. "They out-shot us and controlled the ball well."

The Lady Falcons led 3-0 at intermission and added four scores in the second half to win going away.

Riverdale out-shot Ada, 37-5. Bulldog senior keeper Kenzie Long made 30 saves in goal.

Ada (2-3-1 NWC) plays at backyard league rival Allen East (7-4-1, 2-2 NWC) Monday, October 7.
