Helpful hints, insights on how to become a healthier version of you

New Year, New YOU!

Welcome to the first Healthe Habits for Living (HHL) posting offering helpful hints and quick insights on how to become a healthier version of you.

"Hello, I’m Christine Schroeder, MOT, OTR/L, Occupational Therapist and Director of the HHL program, located at Ellerbrock Spine and Soft Tissue (ESST) in Bluffton."

After working for a number of years in business, I decided to go back to school; I received my Master's in Occupational Therapy (MOT) in 2015 from The University of Findlay. My husband and I live in Ottawa with our 3 children, ages 16 (daughter), 13 (son), and 10 (son).

Pastor Trent Boedicker led the first meeting of a grief support group at ReStore Community Center on Thursday evening. Those who think they will benefit from a grief support group are invited to the next meeting which will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8 at the center, 210 N. Main. The meeting is followed by a free supper.

Pastor Boedicker began Thursday evening’s gathering with prayer, a familiar Christian song, and words of encouragement from Scripture.. Following dinner, there was time for fellowship. Pastor Boedicker is a graduate of Ada High School and Grace Bible College and has served as pastor of Grace Bible Church in Ada for 17 years.

A wish come true. Two-year-old Rory McAlpine has an entire wall to fill with LEGOs. The wall, to create whatever the mind concocts, is part of the addition/renovation at the Ada Public Library. The new youth area is made for all kinds of activities, and Youth Services Coordinator Natalie Walton has many programs planned in the coming months. The youth area is colorful, filled with books, and has a stairstep seating arrangement in one corner for lessons and events. It will be a happy place for children. (Reminder: the library is now closed due to construction, will reopen Jan. 22.)

When Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., came to Ada

By Monty Siekerman
Today marks the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s speech at Ohio Northern University on Jan. 11, 1968. A copy of his 50-minute speech can be heard at the website Onu.edu/MLK. Other material about his visit to ONU is at that website, as well.

If the building could sing its performance would cover the musical landscape

Theodore Presser had taught at Northern during its first year, and he maintained cordial relations with President Henry Solomon Lehr. After leaving teaching, Presser entered the field of music publishing and founded the firm which still bears his name.

In 1925, Presser's will provided funds for music buildings on 10 campuses, including Ohio Northern's. In ONU’s case, this gift amounted to around $100,000 (equal to $1.5 million in today’s dollars due to inflation).

Ada native Ernie Daugherty was sworn in as a new member of the Ada School board on Wednesday evening.

Certificates of appreciation were awarded to board members Ron Fleming, Nancy Wood Allison, Amy Mullins, Matt Gossman and Daugherty. Pastor Tom Dearth was honored last month for his many years of service to the board. Supt. Meri Skilliter said, “We are grateful for a dedicated, diverse group of people who make this district’s students the center of all decisions.”
