You are waiting for your pizza to be delivered, and you wonder why it is taking so long. Finally the driver arrives, frustrated because she couldn’t find your address on your house.

Waiting a few extra minutes for a pizza is an inconvenience, but having an improperly placed street address, or no visible street address, could be a life or death situation when emergency services are trying to respond to a call.

Work orders for water and sewer services are issued based on street addresses, and if Village employees have difficulty locating your house number, your requested work may be delayed.

Village ordinance does give you some direction for proper placement and display of your street address.

Per Ordinance 1351.17 (c): “Premises Identification. Buildings shall have approved address numbers placed in a position to be plainly legible and visible from the street or road fronting the property. These numbers shall contrast with their background. Address numbers shall be Arabic numerals or alphabet letters. Numbers shall be a minimum of 4 inches (102 mm) high with a minimum stroke width of 0.5 inch (12.7 mm).”

Painting the house number on the curb, street, or in the right of way is not permitted in the Village. Such an act is considered destruction of Village property and subject to prosecution.

If your street address is not properly placed, you may receive a notice of violation from the Village Zoning Inspector. Penalties could include a fine of up to $100 per day after the Zoning Inspector has served the notice.
