AKRON — Sophomore Lauren Halle (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) won the 200 fly in convincing fashion, leading the Ohio Northern women on the third and final day of the 2018 Ohio Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championships on Saturday at the University of Akron's Ocasek Natatorium.

Halle won the 200 fly in 2:08.28, touching a full 3.43 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor for her second championships title of the meet.

The Ohio Northern coaching staff, led by 14th-year head coach Peggy Ewald, was named the Co-OAC Women's Coaching Staff of the Year.

GAMBIER — Senior Samuel Boyd (Killbuck/West Holmes) finished first in the 1,000-meter run to lead the Ohio Northern men's indoor track and field team at the Kenyon Classic on Saturday afternoon.

Northern (26-15 overall) finished fourth of 10 teams with 63 points.

Boyd finished first in the event in a season-best 4:28.28 to lead the way for ONU.

Sophomore Cameron Marous (Brecksville) picked up where he left off a season ago, leading the Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team to a convincing 25-3 victory over Calvin (Mich.) in its season-opener on Saturday afternoon at Dial-Roberson Stadium.

The Polar Bears improve to 1-0 overall, while the Knights drop to 0-2.

Marous tallied a game-best four goals on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting evening and added a game-high five ground balls.

In total, 16 players scored for Northern in a balanced offensive attack.

GAMBIER — Freshman Lauren Turner (Bellevue) had the top individual performance to lead the No. 8-ranked Ohio Northern women's indoor track and field team at the Kenyon Classic on Satruday afternoon.

The Polar Bears finished eighth of 10 teams and move their record to 30-12.

Turner posted a second place finish in the 1,000-meter run, posting her career-best time in the event, finishing in 3:14.77.

Ethel L. Watkins, age 86, died on Sunday, February 18, 2018 at 2:59 a.m. at her residence in Alger.

She was born on March 17, 1931 in Estille, Kentucky to Nathan and Nancy (Conley) VanHoose who preceded her in death. On May 27, 1960 Ethel married Ralph Watkins who prededed her in death on December 24, 1985. 

Ethel retired from Rudolph Foods in Westminster after working as an assembler for 11 years. She was a life member of the Ada VFW Post #9381 Women’s Auxiliary.

ADA - Visiting Columbus Grove outscored Ada 9-1 down the final stretch to pull out a hard-fought 51-41 Northwest Conference boys basketball win before a big crowd Friday night.  

 

The purple and gold dropped to 4-16 overall and 2-5 in the NWC with the defeat. Meanwhile, a young Grove squad improved to 9-11 and 4-3 in league play after their fourth victory in five outings.  

 

"I thought the difference in the game was that Grove was the tougher and more physical team," said Ada second-year head coach Dre White. "For the most part, we executed our game plan pretty well.
