Symphony Orchestra and University Singers present season-finale concert April 30
The Ohio Northern University Department of Music presents the Ohio Northern Symphony Orchestra and University Singers in a season-finale concert in the Freed Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, April 30, at 7:30 p.m.
Under the direction of Ben Ayling, the University Singers will perform “Sing Dem Herrn,” a composition by Pretorius arranged by Wallace DePue, Bowling Green State University professor emeritus. Compositions by Palestrina, Helvey and Ola Gjeilo will follow. The world premiere of “For Our World” will then be presented.
Student assistant conductor Shawn Stevens, a senior music education major from Lima, Ohio, will lead Elaine Hagenberg’s arrangement of “I Will Be A Child of Peace” followed by “The Eternal Gates,” “Shenandoah” and “Jabberwocky.” An arrangement of “All Rise,” featuring tenor Jordan Loyd, a senior music performance major from Independence, Ky., and “He Never Failed Me, Yet,” featuring Adriane Thompson Bradshaw, ONU’s vice president for student affairs, will round out this portion of the concert.
Music director Travis Jürgens will conduct the Symphony Orchestra program, “Sacred and Secular: Fauré’s Requiem,” after intermission. This program includes Bizet’s “Carmen Suite No. 2” and Fauré’s Requiem, op. 48. Assistant conductor Jessica Wise, a senior music performance major from Troy, Ohio, will conduct a movement of the Carmen Suite.
The University Singers join the Symphony for the Fauré Requiem, which portrays a synthesis of mourning and peace. Kirsten Osbun-Manley, ONU lecturer in music and musical theatre, and Lance Ashmore, ONU lecturer of music, will appear as soloists during this work.
Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, $10 for ONU faculty and staff, and $5 for students. The Freed Center box office is open Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Phone orders are accepted with American Express, MasterCard, VISA or Discover by calling 419-772-1900.
