Ada senior is Hardin winner of Franklin B. Walter Award
Jacob Colwell is a black belt in Karate, a member of the Ada HS golf team, trumpeter in the band, on the gold winter guard team, and plans to enroll next fall at Ohio Northern in its mechanical engineering program.
He balances these extra-curricular activities while taking Calculus II at ONU, Physics for college credit plus, and a mix of other academic courses including French III, CAD III and Advanced Placement English. And, he carries a 4.0 grade point average.
It’s no small wonder that Jacob was selected to represent Hardin County as this year’s Franklin B. Walter All-Scholastic Award winner – one of 88 winners in Ohio. As a recipient he is recognized as one of the best and brightest students in the Class of 2019 in Ohio.
On April 11, Colwell attended an awards luncheon in Columbus to receive the award.
Accompanying him were his mother, Kate Coldwell, Meri Skilliter, Ada superintendent and Dan Lee, high school principal.
With all these interests, when asked what turned him on to mechanical engineering, he replied,
“I like math and solving puzzles.”
In our chat with Jacob, we also discovered he like to play the card game Yu-Gi-Oh! He usually buys his lunch and can be found at a lunch table with Gabe Hasan, Austin Amburgey, William Jolliff and Rob Allison.
Depending upon the day, he goes for either buffalo chicken or pizza.
This summer Jacob plans attend music camp at Ohio Northern, and will be found working in the mail room at ONU, a good place for guy who likes to work with numbers.
