Ada's latest news

Three Ohio Northern athletes were named All-American Scholars for 2016-17 by the Women's Golf Coaches Association.

Seniors Jennifer Hipskind (Fort Wayne, Ind./Dwenger) and Ariana Tomasula (Rocky River/Lutheran West) and sophomore Caitlin Silva (Hilliard/Bradley) all earned the honor.

The Polar Bears posted a third place finish at the OAC Championships and a 26-27 overall record under fourth-year head coach Chad Bucci.

Here's the staff of Ada High School "The Voice." Names of the staff members are under the photo. The school year is 1968-69.

GVE THNX is spotted from time to time in Ada. The Icon saw the plate on a white Camaro with orange trim parked at the Ada post office.

Here are Ken Collins photos of early July scenes in Ada taken with 35-mm film, you know, the old fashioned camera with Real Film that you have to get printed or have a darkroom of your own. Nearly everyone has a camera with them nowadays since nearly everyone has a cell phone or computer tablet. Most cameras that require film are stored away in a drawer gathering dust...waiting for the time they qualify for entry into a museum.

Ada Area Chamber of Commerce members will get an update on the proposed Ada dog park this week.

The chamber meeting, open to the public, is at 8 a.m., Wednesday,  July 19, in McIntosh Center on the ONU campus, according to David Dellifield, chamber president.

Due to construction, the breakfast meeting takes place in the Bear Cave. Persons attending should use the parking lot west of The Inn and enter on the south entrace of McIntosh at the double-door entrance.

Mushroom poisoning only comes from eating the flesh of the mushroom not from handling it.

Drew Mowery, 2, sits among a display of large mushrooms in the 200 block of West North Avenue last week (they have since been mowed down).

He's the son of Eric and Jessica Mowery. Wanting to know more about the mushrooms, the Ada Icon turned to Curtis Young, Ph.D., who lives not far away.

He has seen the mushrooms pop up in the yard for many years and could readily identify the variety and tell us something about it. In fact, they also grow in his yard.

He is Extension Educator for Van Wert County.
