Birchaven Village has been named to the list of Best Nursing Homes 2017-18 by U.S. News & World Report. This is the third time Birchaven has been named to this prestigious list.
To qualify as a Best Nursing Home, facilities had to earn an average of 4.5 stars or better during 10 months of federal reports ending in August 2017 and had to consistently meet certain performance standards set by U.S. News during the period, such as earning at least four stars in the CMS overall rating for all 10 months.
The same natural curiosity that spurred Jake Zimmerman toward a career in science has resulted in a patent for a research project that could eventually lead to a breakthrough to more easily detect dangerous amounts of lead in drinking water.
Zimmerman, ONU associate professor of chemistry, has long studied the ability of fluorescent compounds to serve as chemical sensors. He continued to see practical applications to his research, particularly in regards to current events.
The result was the awarding of both U.S. and international patents for his work.
The Ohio Northern swimming and diving teams are holding their annual "Swim for Cystic Fibrosis" fundraiser on Saturday during their 1 p.m. home meet against John Carroll at the ONU Sports Center.
Cystic Fibrosis is a rare disease that affects approximately 30,000 children and adults in the U.S alone. The money raised at the event will be donated to the CF Foundation.
The CF Foundation relies on donations to help find a cure for this life threatening disease.

Ohio Northern's Megan Nieszala (Lambertville, Mich./St. Marys Catholic Central) and Chelsea Huppert (Bremen, Ind.) were named First Team All-Great Lakes Region and freshman setter Katie Wade (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) was named the Great Lakes Region Freshman of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association for 2017.
Nieszala is a repeat selection on the All-Region squad, as she earned the honor as a junior in 2016.
Nieszala and Huppert were also named First Team All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Wade was a Second Team All-OAC pick and was the OAC Freshman of the Year earlier this week.
