For the 7th time, Ohio Northern has been named a Tree Campus USA by the Arbor Day Foundation.

Tree Campus USA honors universities and their leaders for promoting healthy trees and engaging students and staff in conservation.

To obtain the recognition, Ohio Northern met the five standards for sustainable campus forestry including establishment of a tree advisory committee, evidence of a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance, and the sponsorship of student service-learning projects.

When Ohio Northern University launched the “Campaign for Engineering: Building Impact at ONU,” 1972 engineering graduate Charles “Chris” Claypool, and his wife, Barbara, didn’t hesitate to make a lead gift to help get the initiative off the ground. After all, as a member of the team that completed a campaign feasibility study for ONU’s College of Engineering, Chris knew exactly how much support was needed.

Over the past four decades, Claypool has grown Claypool Electric Inc., the Lancaster, Ohio, company that his father founded in 1954, into a firm that employs more than 200 people.

Kayla Hummell of Hilliard has received the 2017 Catherine Freed Outstanding Senior Female Leadership and Service Award from ONU. Hummell graduated from ONU this spring with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a minor in applied mathematics.
