Just over a month after head coach Bob Olwin announced his retirement, Ada High School hired former varsity assistant Shawn Christopher to fill his shoes.
The school said in a press release on Friday that the Ada Board of Education voted Thursday night to accept the recommendation to move Christopher to the head coach position after serving as the defensive coordinator for the past five years. Before that, Christopher served as the program’s JV and running backs coach for five years under head coach Mike Fell.

Today is National Arbor Day, so it was fitting that the Ada Tree Commission hold its annual Arbor Day celebration for third graders at the school this morning. And, the youngsters received a white pine sapling to take home and plant.
Sixty-six third graders have been studying trees, how to grow them and their value. Emphasis this year was on destructive insects. Commissioners asked the children questions about trees. They knew the answers.
In turn, the grade schoolers asked questions of the commissioners, such as, “What is a pirate’s favorite holiday?” The answer: “Aaaarrrrgggghhhhbor Day,” of course.
In partnership with Ohio Means Jobs-Auglaize County, Apollo Career Center will host over 60 large and small local employers representing many different career fields, Thursday, May 3, 3-6 p.m.
The Career Expo will offer services offered by Ohio Means Jobs – Auglaize County such as resume building, mock interviews, and skill upgrade. Job seekers should bring a resume unless they need assistance creating one.
Apollo high school students will have the opportunity to talk to employers 1:30-2:30 p.m., and then the expo will be open to the public beginning at 3 p.m.
McGUFFEY - The Ada track teams each finished second at the 11-team USV Ram Invite Thursday evening.
Riverdale won the girls team title with 143.5 points to outscore second-place Ada (108.5). Freshman Brenna Hissong won the 400 meter run to pace the Ada girls.
Junior Olivia Ennis (300 hurdles) and sophomore Nora Dellifield (pole vault) also posted second-place finishes.
McComb out-pointed the Bulldog boys 130-114.5 to win the male team crown. Junior Noah Mattson took first in the discus and second in the shot put to lead the Ada boys.
ADA - Visiting Spencerville scored in every inning to defeat Ada 19-8 in a Northwest Conference baseball game Thursday evening.
The Bulldogs fell to 3-11 overall and 0-6 in the NWC with their seventh loss in a row. The Bearcats improved their record to 6-6 overall and 4-2 in the NWC with the victory.
The Bearcats took advantage of 11 Bulldog errors and eight walks to score nine unearned runs despite getting out-hit. Ada actually banged out more hits than the Bearcats, 8-7.
The Bearcats built a 17-1 lead before the Bulldogs fought back with three runs in the third, and four more in the fourth.
ADA - The host Ada softball team rallied late but came up just short in an 8-5 loss to league leader Spencerville in a key Northwest Conference battle Thursday evening.
The Lady Bulldogs dropped to 10- 6 overall and 3-3 in the NWC with the loss, which unofficially eliminated them from league title contention. The first-place Bearcats improved to 5-0 in NWC play and 8-6 overall after the big win.
Ada fell behind 6-0 but rallied for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it a contest. However, Spencerville tacked on two big insurance runs late to hold on for the victory.
