One of the community's longest running annual events

The 111th annual Ada High School Interclass Competition takes place at 7 p.m., Friday, March 17, in the school auditorium.

Sophomores, juniors, and seniors will compete in the areas of short story, dramatic reading, poetry, and essay.  Intermission entertainment is by the Ada staff and Ada High School senior class, as well as refreshments provided by the Ada Academic Boosters.

Several additional events take place in the school this month. Here's an upate from the school website:

Michelle Durand: "Team members support the community as well"

Michelle Durand, the highly successful women's basketball coach, spoke at the noon meeting of the Kiwanis Club this week.

"How do you get such top notch players to come to ONU," she was asked. She said that you not only look at athletic ability but also whether or not ONU will be a good fit for the prospective student.

She said the Northern players academically have ranked in the top 25 schools nationally for several years. Their grade point average is an outstanding 3.5.

The players find that ONU offers academic programs not found at a lot of schools, noting pharmacy and engineering as two examples.

If you look outside, you might disagree with the weather forecast for our area for March. Here's what the ag forecast looks like:

"MARCH WEATHER UPDATE - Jim Noel
It was one of the warmest February's one record. Further, for the period of January and February combined, many reporting stations in Ohio had the most number of 60+ days ever recorded.

The warm-up has led to green-up conditions running about 3 weeks ahead of schedule in Ohio.

The outlook for March calls for near to slightly warmer than normal temperatures. We will not see the record warmth in March we saw in February. Precipitation will be near or slightly above normal.

The Icon spotted this plate in the Bluffton University student parking lot. It's on a blue Toyota Corolla - with lots of interesting bumperstickers, like "Read Banned Books."

Lent provides a chance to take inventory of our attitudes

Lent, the six-week prelude to Easter, is traditionally a time for sacrifices but can also be a season for making gains, says the Rev. David MacDonald, ONU chaplain.

“Many individuals focus on the aspect of self-denial by giving up something such as a favorite food item,” MacDonald said. “While there is nothing wrong with that practice, Lent can be a season of longer-lasting, more practical impact.”

Rather than merely ditching candy bars for six weeks, Lent provides more meaningful opportunities.
