The University of Dayton Arena will host the Ohio High School Athletic Association girls basketball state tournament for the next three years, OHSAA Executive Director Jerry Snodgrass announced Tuesday. Having hosted 125 NCAA basketball tournament games, UD Arena has been the home court for March Madness more than any other facility in the country. 

Renovated in 2019, UD Arena has a seating capacity of 13,000 and has played host to many OHSAA basketball tournament games, along with Atlantic 10 Conference and NCAA tournament games. During the regular season, it is the home of the very successful University of Dayton Flyers women’s and men’s basketball teams.

Seniors Chelsea Huppert (Bremen, Ind.) and Seth Transue (Plain City/Jerome) were named Ohio Northern's Clyde Lamb Award winners for the 2019-20 academic year.

The prestigious award is the highest honor given to Ohio Athletic Conference student-athletes each year, including one male and one female representative from each of the league's 10 institutions.

An impressive 52 Ohio Northern student/athletes were named Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference in the ten spring sports for 2020.

The ONU women's track and field team had a program record-high of 12 selections and women's lacrosse tied his program-best total with five Academic All-OAC selections.

Men's track and field had 10 honorees, men's lacrosse and baseball had seven each, softball had five, men's golf had three, men's tennis had two and women's golf had one.

 The Ohio Northern Esports team fell in the finals of the Ohio National Collegiate Esports Tournament on Thursday, April 30, to Cincinnati 3-0.

The Polar Bears reached the finals in their first collegiate season with a 3-1-1 victory over Ohio State in the semifinals on April 23 and a 3-0 sweep of Kent State in the quarterfinals on April 16.

Ohio Northern, under first-year head coach Troy Chiefari, finished the spring Overwatch NEC season with a 7-4 record.

"This is a great accomplishment for our players," Chiefari said. "To reach the finals in our first year is very good. Everyone feels bad about the loss, but keep cheering on our guys."

 

Ohio Northern goalkeeper Cole Zaferakis (Liverpool, N.Y.) was named to the InsideLacrosse.com All-Freshman Team for 2020.

Zaferakis was listed by the magazine as the nation's top freshman net-minder.

"This is a great honor and I am so happy for Cole," fifth-year head coach Nat St. Laurent said. "He had a great season. This is huge for our program, to be mentioned on a national level."

In six games this season, Zaferakis had 88 saves, a 9.01 GAA and an amazing 63.3 percent save percentage.
