Ron Beaschler: “Expectations are to pick up where we left off last year and improve"

Ohio Northern wrestling head coach Ron Beaschler enjoyed what he saw out of his young squad last season. They improved as the year wore on, and many of the grapplers performed best toward the end of the season.

Beaschler and the Polar Bears would like more of the same in 2019-20.

"Expectations are to pick up where we left off last year and improve," Beaschler said. "We were young last year. We had a lot of holes, and we filled several of those holes through recruiting. … Guys that got starting opportunities last year need to keep progressing to being better wrestlers this season."

The Ada fall sports awards program scheduled for tonight (Nov. 12)  has been postponed to a date to be announced. Also, all junior high  practices for tonight are canceled.

Named First Team Academic All-District 7 by CoSIDA

Ohio Northern senior Haley Moses (Mason), junior Jenna Fuller (Countryside, Ill./Lyons Township) and sophomore Carissa Beckham (Mason/Mount Notre Dame) have been named First Team Academic All-District 7 in women's soccer for 2019 by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

The three student/athletes are now eligible for the Academic All-America team, which will be announced Dec. 3.

Moses is a mechanical engineering major and plays in the midfield.

She has started all 80 matches in her four-year career and has 11 goals, 20 assists and 42 points. Her 20 assists is tied for the 10th-most in school history.

Kate Witte: "She's a gritty, tough competitor"

She never leaves the court. Her only respite, the occasional time out or short breather in between sets.

She's different. Her uniform clashes with those of her teammates, making her stand out and easily identifiable.

She's loud and talkative. She has to be. Without it, the team would flounder.

She's McKenna Hostetler, libero and captain for the Ohio Northern volleyball team.

Hostetler hails from Plain City, Ohio. It's an unassuming town of 4,000 people located just outside of Columbus' metropolitan reach.

Jonathan Alder High School calls a desolate spot on Route 42 home. It's an impressive structure with nothing much of note around it.

And an automatic bid to DIII tournament

The No. 12-ranked Ohio Northern volleyball team edged Otterbein 21-25, 25-23, 23-25, 27-25, 16-14 in the OAC Tournament Finals on Saturday afternoon in an incredible atmosphere at the ONU Sports Center.

ONU (26-5 overall) earn the OAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament, winning its 21st OAC Tournament title. Ohio Northern head coach Kate Witte won her 15th OAC Tournament title.

Otterbein led 14-13 in the 5th set but a kill by senior Sydney Bapst (Grove City), a Cardinal attacking error, and another Bapst kill won the match for the Polar Bears.

She scored winning goal in double OT in OAC title game

Junior forward Jenna Fuller (Countryside, Ill./Lyons Township) has enjoyed a memorable 2019-20 season. She has scored the most goals by an ONU player in a single season since 1997, and she added to that total in thrilling fashion Saturday night at Kerscher Stadium.

Fuller netted her 20th score of the season in 102nd minute, which pushed the Polar Bears past Otterbein 2-1 in double overtime in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament title game.
