The Thanksgiving Play at Freed Center
This weekend, October 19-22, The Freed Center for the Performing Arts will feature The Thanksgiving Play, which the center describes this way: "When a troupe of really, really well-meaning theater artists attempt to put on a culturally sensitive Thanksgiving school pageant, things get messy. Hilarious and poignant, this satirical comedy reflects on the truth behind Thanksgiving."
Guest director R. Real Vargas Alanis explains that this recent Broadway hit "serves as a satirical exploration of racial dynamics, whiteness, privilege, and sheds light on the well-intentioned—yet potentially misguided—efforts of individuals who may not fully grasp the concept of impact over intention. Rooted in historical atrocities faced by Native communities, the play utilizes humor as a tool to help the audience digest the information...The reality is gruesome, but let’s have fun talking about it!"
