SPENCERVILLE – The visiting Ada High School girls soccer team defeated former league foe Spencerville and the elements 1-0 Tuesday night, October 1.
The match was scoreless in the first half.
In the second half, Ada’s Kenley Poling knocked in a rebound shot off Alex Gibson’s long direct kick to provide the game’s only score.
“Their keeper bobbled it and Kenley cleaned up,” said Ada head coach Doug Dewese. “Alex’s long placed kick came from about midfield after a foul.”
The Bulldogs improved to 8-6 overall with the non-league victory played in a second-half downpour.
The Bearcats dropped to 2-12-1 overall after the defeat.
“We spent a lot of the game in their half of the field and just barely missed on a lot of chances,” said Dewese. “We had great games out of Alex Gibson, Karley Wagner, Lexi Poling and Kenley Poling.
“Spencerville doesn’t have the best record, but they are a tough team,” he continued. “No one they’ve played has blown them out, and they are defensively very strong.
“Considering the weather that came in the second half, I am happy to get the win out of a game that I thought would be a 0-0 tie,” added Dewese.
Alex Gibson earned the assist. Freshman Emily Gibson made one save in goal.
Ada (0-4 NCOSA) plays its league season finale at Cory-Rawson (3-9-1, 0-4 NCOSA) Thursday, Oct. 3 at 5 p.m. The foes are tied for fifth in the six-team league.
“This is the best regular season record an Ada girls soccer team has recorded,” Dewese noted. “Last year it took a tournament win to get our eighth win.”
The Bulldog girls then host Hardin County rival Kenton (5-8-1) Saturday, Oct. 5 at 6 p.m.
The young Bulldog team has at least three matches left to reach the coach’s pre-season goal of 10 or more wins.
