Moves to No. 7 in WBCA poll

The Ohio Northern women's basketball team has moved up three spots to No. 8 in the eighth D3Hoops.com poll, released Monday evening.

The Polar Bears continued their winning ways last week with victories over Heidelberg and Mount Union to remain unbeaten.

Northern (17-0) is one of eight unbeaten teams in the poll.

Tufts (Mass.) held on to the No. 1 spot with 613 points and 15 first place votes, while Amherst (Mass.) remained at No. 2 with 601 points and six first place votes and St. Thomas (Minn.) moved into third place with 565 points and one first place vote.

Northern also moved up two spots in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll to No.7.

ONU’s Emily Richards sets 1,000-meter school record

ADA — Junior Emily Richards (Delaware/Hayes) shattered the 1,000-meter run record by seven seconds as she led the Ohio Northern women's track & field team to a second place finish at the Ohio Athletic Conference North Split Meet at the ONU Sports Center.

Richards won the event in 2:52.42, which broke the previous ONU school record and ONU Sports Center facility record.

Senior Allie Gast (Grandville, Mich.) was victorious in the 60-meter hurdles, winning in :9.26 seconds.

ONU opens indoor season with second place finish

ADA —  The Ohio Northern men's track and field team opened the 2017 indoor season with a second place finish at the Ohio Athletic Conference North Split Meet Saturday afternoon at the ONU Sports Center.

Sophomore Ian McVey (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) posted two first place finishes and led the Polar Bears as he finished first in the 1-mile run in 4:23.34 and took first place in the 1,000-meter run in 2:36.67.

Senior Lucas Shumate (Wapakoneta/Spencerville) posted a first place finish in the weight throw with a toss of 55' 9.25".

In the 500-meter run, junior Matt Molinaro (Sterling Heights, Mich./DeLaSalle) took first place in 1:06.34.

Gift by John and Tabitha Coler continues their support of Ohio Northern University students and southeastern Ohio residents

ADA -- John and Tabitha Coler of Philo, Ohio, have made a lead gift to establish The Shrivers Pharmacies and Coler LTC Endowed Scholarship Fund at Ohio Northern University. The endowment will support scholarships for Ohio Northern students majoring in pharmacy and related allied health sciences as well as business who demonstrate financial need and reside in the communities served by Shrivers Pharmacies.

The first scholarship will be awarded during the 2017-18 academic year.

In many ways, this endowment continues the Colers’ gratitude, visionary spirit and emphasis on serving the residents of southeastern Ohio. 

Arlington tops Ada boys

ARLINGTON - Host Arlington built an 11-point halftime lead and made it stand up for a 56-43 non-league boys basketball win over Ada Tuesday night.

The loss dropped the Bulldog record to 3-11, while the Red Devils improved to 5-8.

Arlington post Logan Speyer sank all 10 of his free throw attempts as he tallied game-high totals of 20 points and 14 rebounds.

Bulldog senior Owen Conley scored 18 points and snagged eight rebounds to lead the Bulldogs.

The Devils led 31-20 at halftime. Ada stayed within striking distance in the second half as they were outscored just 25-23.

Career Fair offers snapshot of economic landscape

More than 100 organizations are expected to be on hand when Ohio Northern University hosts the Winter 2017 Career and Graduate / Professional School Fair from 9:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. on Friday,  Jan. 27 in the King Horn Sports Center Field House.

The event offers an ideal situation for reporters to gauge the job market and gain the insights of employers, those looking to launch their careers and individuals who are preparing students for the workforce.

The occasion is designed for students seeking both full- and part-time employment as well as co-ops, internships, and admission to graduate or professional schools.
