Art and music on Friday

Elzay Gallery of Art begins the semester not only with an art show but also with a concert. Composer, pianist, and multi-instrumentalist Ben Cosgrove performs at 8 p.m. Friday in the gallery. The program is free and open to the public. Ben’s work is focused on landscape, place, and ecology. “I don’t think of my pieces as rendering places in music,” Ben notes in an article in Harvard Magazine, “but more just as responding to places musically.

Welcome to the Ada Icon’s “Ada Teacher Feature.” Here we share thoughts and insights from local teachers who lift up and inspire our students. Let us lift up and inspire these educators as well. Today we meet Teri Salyer.

“I gave up too easily. Math was scary for me!” shares Teri Salyer. Giving up too easily did not remain in Teri’s equation as this Ada and ONU grad is in her 27th year of teaching.  Read on to learn why Teri believes she is in the best profession in the world.

Having heard many speakers in more than 50 years of reporting, I can say none come close to the oratory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. when he spoke for 40 minutes in Taft Gym. I've heard no other speaker compare to his well thought out speech, a man with charisma, keeping his audience spellbound.

A rehearing of his talk of Jan. 11, 1968, which was posted on the Ada Icon Monday in observance of the national holiday, brought these reflections to mind:

1. The civil rights leader took a middle ground saying that yes, advances had been made but there was more to accomplish.

Here's an ODOT update on expenses this winter in clearing roads

The Ohio Department of Transportation Distrtict 1 has used 1,287 tons of salt on Hardin County roads this winter, according to its initial 2016-17 winter expense report.

In addition, in Hardin County, ODOT vehicles have registered 17,441 miles, used 19,120 gallons of deicing liquids, for total labor, equipment and material costs of $222,957.

The chart attached reveals information in each of the counties covered by District 1.

The King family and ONU

Not only did Martin Luther King Jr. speak at Ohio Northern on Jan. 11, 1968, but his widow and two of his children came to campus in the 1990s.
Dr. King died in Memphis on April 4, 1968, less than three months after his address in Ada. It is said that his ONU talk was his last on a college campus.
Coretta Scott King came to Ohio Northern on Jan. 21, 1993. She died Jan. 30, 2006.
A daughter, Yolanda, was at Ohio Northern in January, 1992. She died Aug. 15, 2007.
Another daughter, Rev. Bernice A. King, spoke in ONU's chapel on Jan. 13, 1994.

Girls’ bball: Ada loses OT heartbreaker to McComb

Visiting McComb scored the last 10 points of overtime to pull out a comeback 58-50 victory over Ada in a hard-fought girls basketball battle Saturday afternoon. The Lady Bulldogs fell to 5-7 overall with the difficult defeat. Meanwhile, the Lady Panthers improved to 5-7 with their fifth consecutive win. "If you can't rebound, you can't win," said Ada head coach Bill Taflinger. "We have to win the close games. We just didn't come up with the key rebounds when we needed to."
