April 2013

The Ohio Northern University symphonic band, Northern Winds, and the All-Ohio Honors Band will perform as part of the Spring Band Festival XXXVIII in the Freed Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, April 28, at 4 p.m.

The 70-member Northern Winds will perform a concert that features “Overture to Candide” by Leonard Bernstein and “Abram’s Pursuit” by guest conductor David Holsinger. The program also includes John Mackey’s “Xerxes” conducted by Samantha Riedlinger, a senior music education major from Sycamore, Ohio.

The Ada Icon went to the prom! This year's theme was "Casino Night."

Here's our 2013 Ada High School prom photo album, featuring 13 photos from the April 27 prom. It's in an attachment at the bottom of this story.

The guessing...and the waiting is over. Ada's Zac Dysert is a Denver Bronco.

The Denver Broncos closed out their 2013 NFL Draft by selecting Ada native and Miami University quarterback Zac Dysert in the seventh round.

Dysert was one of the players that came to Dove Valley for a pre-draft visit, Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway acknowledged earlier this week.

It’s prom night in Ada.

The 2013 Ada High School prom, with a “casino theme,” takes place in the 1971 wing elementary gymnasium. The prom is open for parents and community residents to view from 7 to 7:30 p.m.

The grand march begins at 7 p.m.  and is open to the public. Prom is held from 8 to 11 p.m. A post-prom takes place from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Petetanque and lots more is coming to Ada on Saturday.

Pronounced petɑ̃k, the game is a form of boules where the goal is, while standing inside a starting circle with both feet on the ground, to throw hollow metal balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball called a cochonnet (literally "piglet") or jack.
Confused? Don't be.

The Zanesfield Petanque Club is coming to Ada's War Memorial Park from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday during the Ada Area Chamber of Commerce's first-ever spring event.
You'll be able to watch the game that's played by about 17 million people in France and Spain.

Story and photos submitted by the Ada Tree Commission

One of the cool things about being in the 3rd grade at Ada Elementary School is the annual Arbor Day Celebration.

Each spring, the volunteers on the Ada Tree Commission visit the 3rd graders to talk a little about trees. The commissioners share stories about trees, wildlife, and how to plant the bare root tree each student receives from the Tree Commission.

Tree Commissioners also talk to the students about what it means to be a Tree City USA, as Ada has been named for 32 years, and what it means for Ohio Northern University to be a Tree Campus USA, as ONU has been named for four years.

Earth Day – April 22 – was the perfect day for third and fourth year pharmacy students from Ohio Northern University to present a program at Maple Crest, Bluffton, on the proper use of prescription drugs and the proper disposal of out-of-date medications, which includes the issue of environmental protection.

The students are members of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP), an organization that specifically focuses on “empowering pharmacists to enhance the quality of care for all older persons through the appropriate use of medication and the promotion of healthy aging.”

The Ada Icon introduces a new music review column. Delano D. Whidbee, a university student sophomore from Flint, Mich., is the columnist.

He says: "Music has always been around my life. The different creative styles interested me from a young age."

This is more than a serious hobby for Delano. He said, "I check daily to see what new music or exclusive interviews, or music visuals have been released."

And, concerning his favorite music, he said: "I like any music I can relate to, or understand. Also, if there is some creative style to the music whether it’s the instrumental or the way everything flows together."

Welcome Delano. Here's his first column.
