October 2014

Lindsey Peters, Ohio Northern University visiting professor of pharmacy practice, was selected as one of 14 pharmacists to attend the Ohio Pharmacists Association’s 2014 Young Pharmacist Leadership Conference in Columbus, Ohio, on Oct. 11.

Adam Smith, a fifth-year pharmacy major from Dublin, Ohio, and Taylor Reed, a fifth-year pharmacy major from Springdale, Ark., were the student representatives for Ohio Northern University.

Halloween is on lots of Ada calendars this month. There are several opportunities for young and old interested in dressing up for this year’s events. Here’s the local schedule:

Tuesday, Oct. 21 – Ohio Northern University’s annual trick or treat night. From 5 to 7 p.m. events take place in McIntosh Activities Room. Registration begins at 4:30 p.m.

Children of all ages are encouraged to dress up and join the fun with ONU students. Children must be accompanied by an adult to attend.

Thank you Ada Kiwanis Club for choosing to lead an ambitious undertaking to refurbish the Pennsylvania Railroad caboose in the depot park.

The plans from the club are beginning to circulate around town and the Icon thinks its a great idea.

Just to show what the caboose once looked it, (that's not Ada's caboose in the newly painted photo) we've posted the photo above. The color is Pennsylvania Railroad maroon, for purist color-minded people.

Below this story is the same photo plus a look at the current state of Ada's caboose number 477779.

The Ada High School Marching Band competed in two competitions this past Saturday.

The band traveled to Columbus early Saturday morning to compete in the Buckeye Invitational at Ohio Stadium. Following this performance, the band packed everything up, headed to the mall for lunch (still in competition attire garnering a lot of stares) then traveled to Zanesville to compete in the Maysville High School Band Competition.

The $2.1 million East Lima Avenue reconstruction project is nearing completion. Vehicles are now permitted on the street as construction crews put final touches on the project.

The Reconstruction Project is funded in part by grants from the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Ohio Public Works Commission.

Among major timeline events in the project include:
September 2012 – Ada council held public meeting to explain details of the project. Included in the reconstruction are a new 48-inch diameter storm sewer and a new 12-inch diameter water main.

What would Ada students do without homecoming Spirit Week.

One popular part of the week is special dress-up days for students. Here's this year's schedule. Start working on your wardrobe.

You pass it daily. Did you ever stop and think, "How old is it?"

The cannon in the Ada depot park is as much a part of Ada community as the Bulldog is to Ada High School. The cannon, place in 1903, commemorates soldiers who fought in the Civil War.

Bailey Bowers created the composite photo from this year and using a post card of early Ada to recreate the scene.

Ohio Northern University’s Freed Center for the Performing Arts will present “Company” at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 23-25 and matinee performances at 2 p.m. Oct. 25-26.

The clashing sounds and pulsing rhythms of New York City underscore this landmark “concept” show, considered by many to have inaugurated the modern era of musical theatre. “Company” follows anti-hero bachelor Robert as he makes his way through a series of encounters with April (the stewardess), Kathy (the girl who’s going to marry someone else), Marta (the peculiar one), as well as his married friends.

With temperatures in the 60s and 70s, it certainly doesn’t feel like October. Guy Verhoff, Pandora weather observer, provided The Icon with the weather summary of the first 13 days of October. The summary is in the attachment at the bottom of this story.
