ONU professor honored with prestigious mathematics award
The Mathematical Association of America has selected Ohio Northern University professor of mathematics Khristo Boyadzhiev as the winner of the 2013 Carl B. Allendoerfer Award, which is given for articles of expository excellence published in Mathematics Magazine.
Boyadzhiev was recognized for his article “Close Encounters with the Stirling Numbers of the Second Kind.” The Allendoerfer nomination states, “Boyadzhiev’s fascinating historical survey centers on the representation of Stirling numbers of the second kind by a binomial transform formula. This might suggest a combinatorial approach to the study, but the article is novel in its analytical approach that mixes combinatorics and analysis.”
Catherine Albrecht, dean of the Getty College of Arts & Sciences, said, “Boyadzhiev joins a distinguished list of well-respected professionals in the field of mathematics; this ranks him among the best in the nation.”
Established in 1976, the Carl B. Allendoerfer Award is named for Carl Allendoerfer, a distinguished mathematician at the University of Washington and former president of the Mathematical Association of America. The award is for $500, and up to two are given annually at the summer meeting of the association.
