Wonder Word turns out as a great exercise in learning word meanings
This looks like fun. And it is.
Ada school speech language pathologist, Sherry Miller, created a vocabulary program at Ada elementary that’s a big hit with students.
OPEN THE EXAMPLES AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS STORY.
“The intent of this Wonder Word vocabulary project is to boost vocabulary overall our entire building,” she says.
“Vocabulary acquisition is a powerful tool and scientifically proven as a link in becoming a stronger reader and writer,” she adds.
“My hope is this,” she says, “by applying brain-based principles of taking an unknown word, looking it up, then rewording the definition and matching a drawing to it will assist students in permanently anchoring that word in their brain.”
She posts many of the students’ work for all to see. This makes the students the teachers of the words and definitions become student-to-student based.
The words go across curriculum and are examples Miller finds that her language-impaired students struggle to acquire and retain.
She said, “These are words that your students need to know for life!”
