The Ada Exempted Village Schools have announced that a school dog. Dolly, a 2.5 year old Goldendoodle, will be introduced to students. The announcement states, “There is a significant amount of research that indicates many benefits to having a school dog including: 

A calming effect on students, particularly those with behavioral or learning difficulties; Encouraging expression and participation in more withdrawn children; 

• Fostering a sense of responsibility; 
• Development of social skills; 
• Improved academic performance; 
• Increased reading competency; Improving attendance 

Owner and school social worker Katie Badertscher, LISW, notes, “Dolly has completed an American Kennel Club approved training designated for school dogs, and is certified and registered as an AKC Canine Good Citizen. Her vaccination records will be kept as part of the school dog's risk assessment. 

"While moving around the school, Dolly will always be kept on a short leash, and will always be supervised by a member of the office staff. 

"There has been a school dog risk assessment completed by our guidance staff, which will be reviewed regularly. If at any point it comes to light that Dolly does not actively enjoy life in the school environment, then she will no longer attend. 

"It is accepted that interacting with animals is not appropriate for all children, but for most it has the potential to provide many positive benefits. Any parent/caregiver who does not wish for their child to interact with Dolly due to allergies, fears, or other reasons is invited to contact me by sending an email to [email protected] and inform me of their wishes. Please also ensure that your child's medical records in Final Forms are up-to-date. 

"Permission for your child to have some contact with the school dog will be presumed if no written communication is received by January 2nd 2024.
