Bulldog softball upset by Delphos Jefferson
By Cort Reynolds
DELPHOS – The visiting Ada High School softball team lost 4-1 to former Northwest Conference foe Delphos Jefferson on a windy but warm Tuesday evening, April 29.
Ada fell to 15-3 after having their six-game win streak snapped.
The Wildcats improved to 12-6 after the win.
“We didn’t show up,” said Bulldog head coach Jeff Bassitt.
The Bulldog girls were out-hit by the Wildcats 7-6, and both teams played error-less defense.
DJ scored two runs in each of the first two innings to build a 4-0 lead. The Wildcats smacked five doubles in the game, and touched workhorse Bassitt for seven hits over the decisive first two frames.
Ada pushed its lone run across home plate in the fifth. Aidra Preston hit a double, and Reese Jordan singled her home.
“We had some timely hitting early on,” said DJ head coach Doug Geary. “We hit the ball hard. The wind might have helped a little bit, for sure. We put the ball in play.”
Winning pitcher Claire Brinkman struck out two and scattered six hits over seven innings.
“Our pitcher did a fantastic job; she limited the walks and got ahead in the count,” Geary explained. “She pitched a great game. Defensively, we made the routine play, and we made a couple pretty tough plays.”
Wildcat catcher Carolyn Mueller slugged two doubles and a single to pace the victorious offense. Senior first baseman Emma Kunz singled and collected two RBI for DJ.
Gracie Creque and Brylee Geary each hit a double and scored a run for the Wildcats. Isabella Basinger added a double.
Bassitt went the distance to suffer just her third loss of the season in 18 decisions. The senior ace struck out six and allowed four earned runs on seven hits over six innings.
Bassitt threw 93 pitches, compared to 77 by Brinkman. The spunky Bulldog also had two steals and one hit.
Ada sophomore Jordan singled twice and swiped two bases. Seniors Karley Wagner and Natilyn McClain hit a single apiece. Senior first sacker Preston stroked a double.
“We need to come back Wednesday ready to get back on track,” said Bassitt.
Ada (6-2 BVC) resumes league play at home Wednesday, April 30 vs. tough Arcadia (9-7, 5-3 BVC). The Bulldogs then entertain winless Perry (0-11) Saturday at 11 a.m.
