Northern faculty presents chamber music recital Feb. 16

 

The Ohio Northern University Department of Music presents an evening of chamber music in the Snyder Recital Hall in the Presser Building on Sunday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

ONU music faculty members Lance and Pamela Ashmore, Michele Smith, and Thomas Hunt will perform selections from Gustav Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder (in an arrangement for voice, piano, oboe and horn by R. G. Patterson) and the Jean-Michel Damase Trio for oboe, horn and piano.

Ohio Northern University LLM student to prosecute cases in Allen County Prosecutor’s Office

Ezmarai Osmany, an Ohio Northern University LLM (Master of Laws) student who also is a former prosecutor in Afghanistan, will have the opportunity to prosecute in the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office after receiving special permission from the Ohio Supreme Court.

Bruce French, ONU professor of law and director of clinical programs, helped spearhead the efforts to have Osmany prosecute cases and said that this is the first time anything like this has been done in the state of Ohio. Traditionally, students must have completed two years of law school in order to get a student license, but a petition to the Ohio Supreme Court granted a license for Osmany.

ONU alumnus John Bishop to be inducted into OFIC Hall of Excellence

John J. Bishop, a 1972 Ohio Northern University graduate and chairman of the board of The Motorists Insurance Group, was selected as a 2014 inductee into the Ohio Foundation of Independent College Hall of Excellence.

Bishop was among four selected for the Hall and will be formally inducted at the “Evening of Excellence” on April 16 at the Renaissance Downtown Hotel in Columbus, Ohio. Joining Bishop as inductees into the Hall of Excellence are author and health and nutritionist expert Jean Carper (Ohio Wesleyan University), chairman of NVR Inc. Dwight C. Schar (Ashland University), and chairman and CEO of Thomas Properties James A. Thomas (Baldwin-Wallace University).

ONU opens Spring Reading Series with acclaimed filmmaker

The Ohio Northern University Department of English opens its 2014 Spring Reading Series with filmmaker Ya’Ke Smith in the Dicke Forum on Thursday, Feb. 20, at 3 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The Freed Center presents ‘The Things They Carried’

The Ohio Northern University Freed Center for the Performing Arts presents “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien on Thursday, Feb. 13, at 9:30 a.m.

A pre- and post-show interactive discussion will be held, during which audience members can explore themes such as ethics, making choices and violence. The content of the performance is appropriate for high school audiences and older.

Ohio Northern’s BLSA Diversity Forum to focus on ‘The Importance of Diversity in the Legal and Political Fields’

The Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law’s 15th annual Diversity Forum will discuss “The Importance of Diversity in the Legal and Political Fields” in the Celebrezze Moot Court Room 129 on Friday, Feb. 21, at 11 a.m.

The ONU Black Law Student Association (BLSA), in partnership with the ONU Student Bar Association, ONU Office of Multicultural Affairs, the National BLSA, the Midwest BSLA and the ONU Student Senate, is sponsoring the event.
