President Myrna McCurdy called the weekly meeting of the Ada Kiwanis Club on order at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, at McIntosh Center, ONU.

The invocation was offered by Jon Umphress.

Joyce Barge was welcomed as a guest.

The birthday of member Heather Cox on April 27 was noted.

The membership anniversaries of Dustin Brooks (April 24, 2009) and David Dellifield (April 28, 2009) were also noted

Sharon MacKenzie mentioned that she attended the U.S. citizenship ceremony in Findlay last week. She noted that it was a very impressive ceremony.

On April 21 The Hardin County Dairy Club, held its third 4-H meeting, where we had our officer election.

For president, Jacob Parker was elected. Joy Boone as Vice President.Treasurer is Jessica Boone. Health and safety and Recreation officers were distributed among many members Croft Bauer, Clint Kitchen and many other clover buds and early 4-H members. Finally, yours truly George Bauer as your secretary and news reporter. 

One of our members, Clint Kitchen, demonstrated how to prepare and show a dairy cow, with our eldest member Joey Bauer as the cow! Giving key pointers on how to do well in Dairy Showmanship.

Don Castle of Ada was recognized as the American Red Cross Hardin County Volunteer of the Year during the county's April 10 recognition luncheon.

A board member, he is active in helping with special events, garnering financial support from the community whether it be for the annual pancake breakfast or golf outing.

Several other Hardin County individuals and groups were also recognized. The Hardin County Clara Barton Award was presented to Madelyn Lowery of Kenton. Lowery is a long-time board member. She has been the chapter’s liaison with United Way for several years and helps at the Day of Caring Blood Drive with United Way in July.

In business:
-Treasurer Bryan Marshall updated members on club finances.

-Secretary Brian Myers reported on the Kiwanis International Foundation’s Annual Gift Campaign.

-On April 3rd, the satellite club hosted the Ada Kiwanis Club’s induction of new members David MacDonald, Matt Crawford and Amanda Bennett

The Ada Icon recently sat down with Cole Tabor, Ada High School junior. Here’s a segment of our conversation.

What classes are you taking this semester?
Cole: Varsity Singers, Algebra III, American Government, English II College Prep, and Art I A and B.

Any activities outside of academics?
Cole: I run track and play football. I’ll be a wide receiver in football next season. In track I run the 200, 400 and am on the 4 by 200 relay. My personal best in the 200 is 27.9 seconds and in the 400 1:10. Our relay was second at the Spencerville Relays.

The Ada Icon caught up with Taylor Willeke, Ada High School senior, recently. Here’s a portion of that conversation.

What courses are you taking this semester?
Taylor: Physics, Calculus, Sociology, Personal Finance, Spanish IV and Advanced Prep English 12.

When was the first time you held a basketball?
Taylor:
Probably when I was 2 years old. My dad was the eighth grade basketball coach and he’d take me to practice with him.
