State Route 195 between county Road 110 and township Road 100 (East Cottonwood Road), just south of McGuffey, will close June 6 for approximately 30 days for a resurfacing and widening project. Traffic will be detoured onto county Road 110, state Route 235 and state Route 309 back onto state Route 195. Work is being performed by Bluffton Paving, Bluffton.

The Ada Family Center will sponsor its sixth annual free movie at Ada War Memorial Park bandshell at 8 p.m. on Friday, June 1. All are invited, according to Pastor Ray Hadley. There also will be free popcorn and candy. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on.  The movie will be cancelled, if it rains.

Alan Seibert, known as the Music Man, entertaines residents of Vancrest on Thursday morning. The Grover Hill man is a popular entertainer for the residents, performing at the retirement center every other month singing and playing his guitar, harmonica and drums.

The Ada Lions Club gave scholarships to six students this year. Receiving $1,000 each were Erryk Katayama (Case Western), Caitlyn Stover (Findlay), Jayson Sumner (Pittsburgh), Olivia Alexander (Xavier), and Madison Gossard (Heidelberg). Nicole Lehsten (Toledo) received $750. Money is raised by the club’s mulch sale project which is going on now. The club has awarded $76,000 in scholarships in the past 18 years.

Special dedication Monday in the railroad park

The Village of Ada, Ohio Northern University, and numerous contributors have partnered to honor Union veterans of the Civil War on Memorial Day.

Commemorative bricks, each inscribed with the name, rank, and unit of 82 Civil War veterans from Ada and Liberty Township, will be dedicated at 10 on Monday in Railroad Park.

The bricks have been installed at the base of the Civil War monument in the park, which is located at Main Street and Central Avenue. The monument, a Civil War era siege cannon on a granite base, stands next to the Pennsylvania Railroad caboose and across the street to the north of Liberty National Bank.

Don Traxler is Memorial Day featured speaker

Ada VFW Ream-McElroy Post 9381 and the Ada American Legion Post will sponsor a Memorial Day service at Woodlawn Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 28. All are welcome.

Don Traxler, former mayor and retired ONU professor, will speak on “Let Freedom Ring” saying all should have the four Fs in their life: faith, family, friends, and fun.

Members of the Ladies Auxiliary will place wreaths in memory of servicemen who died in wars, including the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, Spanish American War, Mexican War, World War I, U.S. Veteran, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf, Iraq War and Afghanistan.
