Good fishing weather brought out many people to the Liberty Conservation Club’s annual May fishing derby on Sunday.
The derby is a big membership drive for the club with participants paying a $20 annual membership fee to try to catch tagged fish that will win you a prize. A few nights before the derby, club members add about 500 pounds of catfish, trout, and panfish to the quarry to make the fishing better, tagging some of them for prizes.
Youth get the first shot at trying to snag a winning fish. Later in the afternoon, adults try their luck.
The Ada High School band, fall color guard, and winter guard members were recognized as well as first chair players during the band concert on Monday night. The following students received special recognition:
Noah Mattson, Ada FFA president, recently received the State Degree during the State FFA Convention in Columbus. The degree is based on evaluating the top students in Ohio and their involvement in chapter, district, state, and national activities. It also awards students for their SAE projects, community service, and leadership. Mattson’s projects included a lawn mowing service and working on a dairy operation.

Farmers have been busy planting the past three weeks with a few moderate rains to break things up. This year planting was delayed by a couple weeks due to cool and wet conditions. Because of that, the activities such as spraying fields with herbicides, applying fertilizer and tillage activities were not completely done by the usual date of the beginning of May.
