Polar Bears looking for first win

Ohio Northern football opened the Ohio Athletic Conference portion of its schedule with a 45-14 loss at Heidelberg on Saturday night at Hornemann Stadium.

The contest was the sixth in the Bendekovic Bowl series and was the first night game in stadium history.

The Polar Bears fall to 0-2 overall and are 0-1 in the OAC, while the Student Princes improve to 1-1, 1-0.

Freshman Christiaan Williams led the Ohio Northern offense with 123 yards rushing, 63 yards receiving and 186 all-purpose yards.

Sophomore Will Freed completed 17-of-37 passes for 170 yards.

Ada sweeps Panthers in NWC spike opener

ADA - The Ada volleyball team won its Northwest Conference opener Tuesday night over Paulding in a rematch of the 2015 league co-champions.

The 25-14, 25-18, 25-19 victory over the Panthers upped the Lady Bulldog record to 5-5 overall and 1-0 in league play. Paulding fell to 0-5 and 0-1 in the NWC with the defeat.

Junior Melina Woods led Ada with 23 kills, 14 digs, six blocks and one ace.

"Melina was just outstanding all-around," said Ada head coach Melissa Gossard. "Our serving was outstanding. We knew this was a big match and I am really proud of them."

SPENCERVILLE - The Ada golf team competed in a three-team Northwest Conference event Wednesday.

Host Spencerville won with 165 strokes, followed by Columbus Grove (173) and Ada (252).

Senior Taylor Ramey led Ada with a score of 58, followed closely by sophomore Austin Amburgey with a 59. Nathan Hurtig posted a 66 while Jake Colwell contributed a score of 69.

Robbie Allison carded a 72 and Alex Morgan added a 79.

Gavin Harmon of Spencerville won match medalist with score of 38.

Makayla Callahan, Katie Butterfield and Latifah Bagais each scored two goals; Kaitlyn Long, Caitlyn Stover, Ruth Pfeiffer, Gizem Tanriverdi, Allie Dotson and Hailey Callahan added one apiece

ADA - The Ada girls soccer team blew out visiting Crestview 12-0 in the Northwest Conference opener Tuesday evening at the park.

The Lady Bulldogs improved to 2-3-1 overall and 1-0 in the NWC with the lopsided win, while the Lady Knights fell to 0-4 and 0-3 in league play after the loss.     

Ada scored four goals in the first half, then poured it on with eight after intermission.

Makayla Callahan, Katie Butterfield and Latifah Bagais each scored two goals to pace the explosive Bulldog offense. Kaitlyn Long, Caitlyn Stover, Ruth Pfeiffer, Gizem Tanriverdi, Allie Dotson and Hailey Callahan added a goal apiece.

Volleyball team beats Perry in straight sets; golfers compete in quad match

ADA - The Ada volleyball team defeated visiting Perry in  three straight sets Monday evening.

The 25-10, 25-13, 25-22 win ended a four-match losing skid and upped the Ada record to 4-5.

Junior Melina Woods led Ada with 17 kills, three digs, three blocks and two aces. Senior Haley Wyss contributed seven kills and five aces with three digs.

"Melina did a great job," said Ada head coach Melissa Gossard. "Our serving was really good."
