Alexis Amburgey has her sights on medical school

Alexis Amburgey, Ada High School junior

What classes are you taking this semester?
College Prep English II, AP U.S. History, French III, Pre-Cal/Trig, Advanced Chemistry, Government and Anatomy/Physiology.

How about your sports activities?
I play basketball, volleyball and softball. Basketball is my favorite. I play point. My best game this year was the first game against Cory-Rawson. I scored 22 points and had a good game overall. In volleyball I’m a hitter and in softball I’m a pitcher.

What other activities are you involved in?
I’m on the Student Council, Quiz Bowl team and in 4-H. I’m in the Ada Barnyard Farmers. I raise rabbits and goats and show them at the fair. Most of the time I have between six and seven Boer goats and between 10 and 12 Mini-Rex rabbits. They were the original Velveteen rabbit. I’ve been in 4-H since third grade. This will be my last year.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?
A doctor. I still do. I’ve visited Kenyon, and will visit Vanderbilt this summer. Those are my top two choices. I want to major in pre-med with a specialty in orthopedic surgery.

I assume you read a lot.
About one or two books a week. I work in the library, so Mrs. Smith suggests books for me.

Tell me about the worst movie you ever saw.
“Branded.” It was awful. I watched it about six months ago with my brother. He picked it out. We didn’t even finish it. It was boring and I really couldn’t relate to it.

Where to you store your music and what do you have?
I keep it on my phone. I listen to Pandora Radio. I have about 10 stations.

Like what?
Maroon 5 and a Rock ‘n Pop Workshop station.

Tell me about your prom dress.
It’s a pink mermaid dress.

How about your locker.
Everything is in order. I’m an organized person.

What’s the worst grade you ever received?
In the seventh grade there was a worksheet that I didn’t know about. It was bad. I received an F.

Did you tell your parents?
Yeah. They told me that it was “only one paper.”

Tell me your best tee-pee story.
It was around sixth grade. I was with Gabby, Tori and Morgan. We went – my mom took us – to Cody Stransky’s house on 235. It was probably midnight. Gabby always did the porch. It was real foggy. Gabby rang the doorbell and we ran. Since it was so foggy we couldn’t see the car and so we thought my mom left. Cody’s older brother work up and thought that his friends were doing it so he chased up. It was a lot of fun.

Where do you want to be in 15 years?
Out of medical school.

Would you consider practicing in Ada?
Yes. I want to live here.

What music that you listen to might be a big surprise to you friends?
Hannah Montana. You know, the good old days of grade school.

Okay, one last question. If you could take any famous person to a lunch anywhere in Ada, who would you invite and where would you go?
(Long pause). I’d take Jennifer Lawrence of the Hunger Games to El Campo.

Thank you and it was great talking with you. Good luck next year.
