Richard the Rooster rides again

He made it through the winter of '17-18 and appears to be going strong

Story by Monty Siekerman - Photo by Karen Ward
Karen Ward, who has produced a photo book of Ada (available at Gallery for the Arts), sent the Ada Icon this photo last week.

She writes, “Came across this crowing rooster in the 500 block of South Johnson today at 6:30 a.m. Guess he made it through the winter. He does like his picture taken.”

The Icon has been reporting on Richard the Rooster since last summer when he first appeared among the houses along Johnson.

Ada Historical Society launches succesful membership drive

Story and photos by Monty Siekerman
Leaders of the newly-formed Ada Historical Society deemed the membership drive a success following a reception in the Railroad Depot and dinner at Viva Maria’s on Monday evening.

Those visiting the Depot saw a large collection of postcards gathered over the years by Lee Crouse (who happens to be one of the Ada Icon weekly columnists, as well). Lee’s postcards were displayed in large frames set on tripods.

What's the story behind this building?

Now Wilson's, former grain hauler manufacturer, almost an organ factory, and ONU's enginnering department

(Reminder: the Ada Historical Society charter membership drive is 5-6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 7, with a reception at the Railroad Depot. $10 individual, $15 family. All are invited to go to Viva Maria’s at 6:30 to continue the conversation over dinner.)

Wilson Sporting Goods makes Ada famous, but at one time the building was going to be the home of the College of Engineering. The Great Depression put a stop to that idea, which is probably a good thing because construction began this week on a $30 million new Engineering Building in the heart of campus.
