Ada schools continue to attain remarkable results

State school report cards for the 2016-17 school year show Ada schools continue to attain remarkable results. The results were released by the Ohio Department of Education this week.

Meri Skilliter, Ada superintendent, provided the following observations on the current report card:

  • Ada scored higher than the other five HC schools in all but graduation rate, where Ada scored a B and Hardin Northern had an A
    • Since Ada graduates classes of less than 100, one student can have a significant impact on graduation rates
  • We met all indicators (though the cut scores, which varied last year, were all raised to 80%) from grades 3-5 (meaning more than 80% of our students passed each test given in grades 3-5)
    • Last year with lower cut scores (and a new test), we only met the mark on one of these 8 tests)
  • On Closing the Gap (a measure of moving our subpopulations in line with the general population), Ada went from an F last year to a B this year
  • In Literacy we went from a D to a B (taking students who are off track in reading and moving them to on grade level)
  • In the measure of Value Added, we received an A, meaning on average Ada students made more than a year’s worth of growth in 9 months of school

The report card, while complicated to interpret (a 35-page manua, which explains the measures can be found on ODE’s web page), has some information that can be used to see progress and identify areas that need to be strengthened.  However, the district looks at many other measures and indicators of progress.  The report card’s importance should not be overemphasized.

Skilliter said, “I am proud of the progress and achievement shown by our report card.  The students, staff, and community continue to live and work toward our school mission of, ‘aspiring to excel in all aspects of the school experience.’ There is plenty to be proud of both on the report card and beyond.”
