The 66 Ada High School graduates turn their tassels (also known as liripipes) at the conclusion of the graduation ceremony in the school gym on Sunday afternoon.

Cheers, clapping and shouts of joy were heard from the class members and family and friends in the audience when the students moved their tassels from the right side of their mortarboards to the left side, indicating the students had graduated.

Dave Lusk was chosen by the seniors to be there commencement speaker. As he took the podium, Dave donned a Cincinnati Reds shirt. Why? Because last winter, the seniors collected money for Dave and his wife, Judy, to see a Reds game.

They collected enough for the couple to see the game on June 7 from the best seats in the house. Dave could only be described as a beloved teacher, one who has instructed Ada students for 38 years in the tough courses of chemistry and physics. He said that teaching at Ada has been his passion, his joy.

Dave told the seniors that no matter how much they accomplished in high school, no matter how many honors they received, they now start over. He encouraged them to build a good reputation. And, if catastrophe or failure strikes, never, ever give up. He also spoke on the importance of having faith in one’s life. His remarks were met not only by a standing ovation, but also by cheers from the graduates.

Assistant Principal Dan Lee, who has known the graduates since they were in the 8th grade, gave what was billed as “highlights of the Class of 2018.” He couldn't have been more complimentary of the class, reciting accomplishment after accomplishment of the class members who have been honored in academics, athletics, music and art, clubs and organizations, and service to the community.

Following the ceremony, the graduates met with their families and friends outside in searing heat for congratulations and picture-taking.
